Nvidia is counting on metaverse FOMO to drive enterprises to its Omniverse-as-a-service platform. At Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference (GTC) today, the chip designer unveiled Omniverse Cloud, which bundles the compute and software grunt needed to build and run metaverse applications on demand, as a service in the cloud, …
Is the "metaverse" even to the point yet that there is a wide-spread need for hosted GPU-intensive server farms? Plus, given how frequently GPUs get revved, by the time (if ever) there is such a need, won't all these current boxes be a couple of generations behind? Who wants to be stuck with racks full of old, somewhat specialized tech like this? Only Nvidia would benefit from such a scheme.
Or is this just Nvidia flopping around on deck like a fish out of water, now that mining is in the decline? Trying to find any way possible to ship more chips and keep the numbers up...
