back to article Former Newport Wafer Fab owner linked to buyback from China's Nexperia

The former owner of Newport Wafer Fab (NWF) is being linked with a buyback of the business that he sold to China's Nexperia, a sale currently being reviewed on grounds of national security by the British government. The FT reports that Drew Nelson – who ran the UK's largest semiconductor maker before it was bought for £63 …

... than upset Uncle Sam. It's not Chinese influence this country should be worried about. It is the constant kowtowing to Washington.

One hour later, three down votes. Three people who think we should kowtow to Washington rather that act in our own interests.

Now 4 people, who prefer to see cooperation between like minded democracies, rather than your posts today promoting the political interests of despotic regimes in Russia, China and Iran.

We saw how American democracy and cooperation works. Huawei was considered not insecure in the UK. Then the USA came along and said "if you don't cancel Huawei there will be trouble."

I haven't promoted anyone. I'm just pointing out where the despotism as you put it really is.

Here’s the problem/one of the problems which has so many brainwashed and failing to understand and realise the easily herded sheep they have become, Voice of Truth.

The quality of education given to the lower class must be of the poorest sort, so that the moat of ignorance isolating the inferior class from the superior class is and remains incomprehensible to the inferior class. With such an initial handicap, even bright lower class individuals have little if any hope of extricating themselves from their assigned lot in life. This form of slavery is essential to maintain some measure of social order, peace, and tranquillity for the ruling upper class. .... https://forums.theregister.com/forum/all/2022/09/14/special_competitive_studies_project_report/#c_4531457

It is just but the tip of that particular titanic iceberg though, for as Einstein is reputed to have noted .....“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

However, all is not lost and change is afoot for global warning is stripping away that former elite protection.

While I have some affection for some things that the USA supposedly stands for (and likes to lecture the world that it stands for), what it actually is and what it puts into practice is quite different.

I would prefer that in The Reg to keep to technical discussions. Huawei was audited by HM Gov and was said to have no back doors. Then along comes the USA. You'd better get with the program, footrests. Or else. So for non-technical reasons a technology leader has been excluded from here. To suit the USA. Freedom? It's freedom to do what the USA tells us.

Re: The UK would rather see the plant closed

It is how the world works, there has always been a powerful entity that influences the rest of the world in its own interests. It is currently the USA that practices domination that is the modern form of Empire in all but name. I think it’s called hegemony now to make it slightly more acceptable. In a century or so it will be another part of the world, probably Somewhere in Asia. 200 years ago, European nations vied with each other for the same end. When was the world ever not like that? Flawed humans, if the Tomorrow People are really among us, let them go forth and outbreed us.

            Not true, VoiceOfYourOwnTruth

At first the UK's NCSC was specific that Huawei kit posed no significant threat under the circumstances in which it was then used. When circumstances changed (the Chinese government clamping down on certain operational freedoms of its "free" enterprises), so too did the NCSC's assessment of the risk. But feel free to wrap the facts in your own garbage interpretation to try and hide what cannot be hidden. Despotism requires despots, not regular changes of leadership every few years.

Inequitable use of said assets is dangerous abuse giving rise to unexpected consequences

"These assets are very dangerous to leave in unstable conditions," he said.

And aint that the sure gospel truth.

Free Market is the freedom to control the market, if we can't control it then we'll break it. When Huawei became the world leader in some categories of telecoms equipment they have sanctions slapped on them. When TikTok became the first China owned net property to achieve widespread international usage it had sanctions slapped on them. As the China's economy moves ever closer to eclipsing the US' more and more sanctions are thrown at it.

And as everyone here knows (fool or not) the only reason for the ban on Huawei's equipment is that having them installed will make the Five Eyes ability to spy on their own citizens more difficult.

It’s happened to Toyota and VW too. Put a foot wrong and be pilloried. But it’s OK for the domestics to take the piss.
