back to article Taking CHIPS Act cash? You're banned from planting advanced fabs on Chinese soil

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has warned that the US Commerce Department "has the ability to claw back money" if recipients of CHIPS Act semiconductor manufacturing grants "compromise national security" by developing leading-edge tech in China in the next decade. Raimondo was speaking at a White House briefing yesterday …

    PNAC

This is all part of Project for a New American Century. The USA is unable to compete fairly so it will compete unfairly. Europe knows it. It should dump the USA and go with China.

      and go with China.

      This deserves a downvote.

The dependency on the USA isn't healthy, but Europe is already too dependent on China as well.

The greater truth of the matter is the USA isn’t healthy and is fully dependent upon Europe and the rest of the world to survive and prosper ..... and that controversial fact is something with terrifies and terrorises Uncle Sam.

It's perfectly reasonable for a country that is giving subsidies to put conditions on it. It has nothing to do with PNAC.

        Re: PNAC

It is all part of the bigger PNAC scheme. Ban Huawei in Europe to satisfy Uncle Sam, because American technology is behind the leader. Ban Russian gas, because it is cheaper than American gas. Subsidies are considered bad in other countries, yet the USA does it all the time.

It's time the USA moved on. It hasn't been a good time.

    Sell, sell!

Wonder how many US politicians sold their shares prior to the announcement.

Depends on how many US politicians were holding those shares.

From that category, I expect about 100% and another 100% for their spouses.

HOW TO CONVERT MURICA INTO RHODE ISLAND

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the woman with the 3 mm eye set was the former Gov of Rhode Island. Rhode Island for you rabid protectionists is and has been for decades the bottom of all States in the USA when it comes to GDP and business rankings. THE BOTTOM... the NADIR... Nice to see she is bringing the same magic to the US Semiconductor pipe dreams. Those dreams by the way are way off in the sunset... If there is one FAB produced in six years, it will be a shinning miracle.

Today's message is CLAWBACK... BUYBACKs were the message of three weeks ago... Yet none of this punitive nonsense is in the actual text of the bill. So it is all arbitrary and capricious nonsense... phoney warnings. "Don't do that or we'll we'll... hurt you real bad." I can almost hear Gene Hackman saying this to Richard Harris... "I'll hurt you real bad."

This is all part of the broader US plan to Nancy Kerrigan Kneecapping China. CHINA IS THE LARGEST BUYER OF SEMICONDUCTORS IN THE WORLD. In five years before INTEL turns OHIO into the SEMICONDUCTOR CAPITAL of the WORLD [sarc], the US won't have any markets at all for their dated FAB or anything else.

Do you Muricans think this Woman or Chuck Schumer, or Biden or Trump are smarter than the Chinese Semiconductor Administrators in Beijing? SMIC has 7nm Fab. Where is Murican's Fab? Oh, that's right the great leader of Tech of all the world will sit out the chump change 7nm fab and go directly to 2nm fab. BTW did you hear the Americans landed on the moon in 1969?

The US main target in spite of the stupid talk of FAB factories is to block the Dutch ASML machines, to block Nvidia GPUs... NVIDIA's largest market for GPU's is CHINA. That must thrill NVIDIA and ASML. That is the lynchpin... ASML. Where is ASML going to be when China starts to build EUV. "OH they can't do that says John Wayne... Why is that?

Well Pilgrim that machine has 100,000 parts and is too complicated for the Chinese to build. [The CEO of ASML begs to differ with Mr. Wayne]. The second excuse is that ASML machine need Zeiss lenses and Japanese parts and Germany and Japan still have standing US Armies since WWII to keep an eye on things....

"Those aren't standing Armies, they pay rent to Germany and Japan... They are RENTERS.... Goodwill RENTERS... So every European and Korean and Japanese firm has to yield to John Wayne and its 900 military bases worldwide. But but but the USA is still the world leader at... well... everything. Just ask John Wayne!

Good crisp start, but going around the far bend, your saddle started slipping, and by the end you were barely miming AManFromMars.

Besides which, anyone in the US government threatening anything beyond a rolling two-year timeframe is talking out their ass. There is no stability in our governance anymore that extends beyond "the next election", whichever election that happens to be at the time.
