back to article Education officials urged to curb student snoopware

What with American students increasingly subject to surveillance software, 15 advocacy groups want the US Department of Education to set monitoring policies that are consistent with civil rights laws. By surveillance software, we mean programs typically running on students' laptops and PCs that allow teachers and other staff …

Invigilation is part of the wonderful future ahead... Embrace surveillance.

Invigilation works... On one hand, it catches the stupid child that gets caught. And they should be punished severely. On the other, the brightest children will find new ways to escape their captivity and will advance the science of cheating and society will richly reward them.

    They're learning the hard way

You do not do what you want with company hardware.

If you want to surf the web and express yourself freely online, get your own laptop. Plead with your parents. Go mow the neighbor's lawn. Save up and buy your own.

But company property is to be used following company directives.

    Welcome to your future.

You are no longer a student...

You are a worker drone from the start of Kindergarten! Get with the program you slackers and nogoodniks. Your parents used to walk to school in the snow. You have it easy now that it is warm. Time you learned your place and contribute to your more than fair corporate benefactors.

If you earn enough in adulthood, after learning our lessons, you can become a student in your retirement. Consider that more than fair compensation you ingrate.

    What do you expect?

Gosh! They keep a beady eye on pupils and find that some of them are misbehaving.

Hardly new, but when everything is connected to the Internet, it is so public.

    >Our data shows that nearly half of teachers say they know of at least one student who has been contacted by law enforcement as a result of student activity monitoring.<

Is there some statistic how many cases were reported to law enforcement for what reason and how often law enforcment found anything to act upon?

Without that statistic showing a significant number of crimes have been prevented i do not think its acceptable that studends have to give up their right of privacy to get an education.

Fortunately we have strict limits on monitoring people on their job hereabouts and studying is considered a profession.

    #2 pencil

Never had a problem with Internet distractions or online cheating when the only device allowed was a pencil.

      Re: #2 pencil

All our exams had to be done in pen. Specifically a biro and not a fountain pen using erasable ink. Pencils may not allow online cheating, but they make it very easy to cheat using a similarly low-tech rubber.
