back to article Samsung boss likely to be pardoned for bribery

South Korea’s prime minister Han Duck-soo announced he would recommend a pardon for Samsung vice chairman and heir Lee Jae-yong during a parliamentary session on Wednesday. The comments were made as Lee is on parole. He was released from jail in August of last year after serving time for bribery and embezzlement charges …

    Second time lucky

There was lobbying to give him a pardon last year too. According to

    https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/samsung-heir-granted-parole-after-us-pressure

from this time last year, the lobbying included the American Chamber of Commerce.

If your business is dependent on just one person, your business is screwed. Yeah, it's gonna hurt to disentangle yourself from them but in the long term it's going to be *so* much better for the business.

Especially if that person inherited the role from his father. Seems to have more in common with how things operate in the other half of Korea.

Considering they have one of the highest inheritance taxes in the world, it does make one won der how these huge chaebols manage to stay in the family. With inheritance taxes of up to 50%, they must use some clever tactics to slowly pass on the wealth to the next generation before popping their clogs.

ISTR at least one chaebol stumping up c$10b in inheritance tax in the news a while back.

Ah, here it is. It was Samsung, just last year.

As a matter of principle, no one should be above the law. This is a bad precedent.

I'd say the laws that Lee Jae-yong are alleged to have broken are now useless. Of course, not everyone will be rich enough to buy their way out of trouble like Lee.

Seems like the new PM is ducking his responsibilities.

No need to throw me out. I can throw myself out, thankyou.

    To avoid this

sort of thing happening again, they should stop using the common as muck word “bribe” and use the word “donated” or “donation” like they do in the U.S.

One law for us, another law for them

Echoes of Conrad Black. If you are friends with people at the top you can get a pardon.

Like an outgoing US president? And no, I'm not just, or specifically, referring to His Trumpiness.
