back to article China seeks global leadership for home-grown fast charging standards

China has decided it needs a fast charging standard for devices sold inside the Middle Kingdom, and hopes its efforts will see its preferred tech rule the world. The China Communications Standardization Association (CCSA) announced it held its inaugural meeting of the Terminal Fast Charging Technology and Standard Promotion …

    So, use USB?

TFA gives a good reason to avoid using QuickCharge (Qualcomm) but it does not explain why China would not want to adopt USB-C like the rest of the world?

The last paragraph seems contradictory with the previous ones.. i.e. EU and US to mandate USB-C

    > By developing fast charging standards, China is therefore giving itself a chance of making some home-grown tech widely accepted. ®

Surely, by developing its own non USB-C charging standard, China would be shooting itself in the foot in terms of making some home-grown tech widely adopted?

Maybe the home-grown charging standard will be more USB-C compatible chips? But the article doesn't say that.

      Re: So, use USB?

Every device manufactor, apart from Apple, has standardized on USB-C already so that the charging standard will be USB-C based is implied? Assuming that "China would be shooting itself in the foot" by it not being USB-C seems an odd assumption to make.

You are holding the article the wrong way.

They aren't abandoning USB-C, they want to create their own standards for fast charging beyond what USB-PD does. Just like Qualcomm has already done, and multiple Chinese companies have already done.

So instead of having something like a half dozen incompatible standards layered on top of USB-C, there would be only two, Qualcomm's and China's national standard. Well, probably more than two since Qualcomm is probably not the only western company who has done this, but they're the only one I know of.
