Ban TikTok already
It is sort of obvious that TikTok is a big telescope into private American data for the Chinese Communist party. TikTok should just be closed.
The US arm of Chinese social video app TikTok has revealed that it has changed the default location used to store users' creations to Oracle Cloud's stateside operations – a day after being accused of allowing its Chinese parent company to access American users' personal data. "Today, 100 percent of US user traffic is being …
The fact TikTok seems to promote the dumbest of the dumb lowest common denominator everywhere in the world EXCEPT China (where it promotes learning and other such topics as deemed desirable by the CCP) would be cause for concern already. I can't help but feel that there is an agenda behind those choices.
> dumbest of the dumb lowest common denominator everywhere in the world EXCEPT China
Isn't this the essence of freedom?
I also suspect this isn't true. Many years ago a Chinese colleague explained why all Chinese ex-pats seem to be super-smart. "The dumb ones don't get to emigrate". Apart from that they're just like us except Chinese. The only thing that our leaders need to bear in mind is that they're a nation of 'Go' players.
Given a choice between keeping all my private data safe from US corporations, and keeping all my private data safe from China, I'd choose the former. China having my private data doesn't affect me, they aren't shoving ads in my face all the time. They don't care about me, and unless they collected data suggesting I was a security risk it wouldn't matter even if I visited there (I wish I had gone when I was younger, they are trending too authoritarian now so like Russia I'll probably choose never to visit)
So how do Tiktok decide whether the data is to go to Oracle or Singapore servers? Is is based on the person says they live in the US when making an account or the IP of where they are accessing Tiktok from?
As im sure that Chinese Tiktok users are still going to have their data sent to the Singapore servers even if they are visiting the US and accessing from a US IP.
Mainland China has an entirely seperate app called Douyin, using the same tech as TikTok, and all of that user data will be stored in China. TikTok isn't available in mainland China, so there aren't any Chinese Tiktok users (other than those who are outside of China or decide to use a VPN).
I don't know how they decide where to store rest-of-world users though - I'd guess it was based on where the account was created because otherwise that'd get messy for travellers.
