I can't help but feel that either the original setups were so badly implemented they need some kind of award or someone's made a mistake in Excel and when the true costs of the move are taken into account it's actually cost the company a few million and now they're left with a less flexible and less maintainable solution......

Or perhaps that's just my jaded view from years of being involved in there kind of projects and seeing the difference between the PR release and the reality of what's been done....

More probably they had a customer base which outgrew the initial design specs. For a while they probably added lots of servers to meet demand. Now they've redesigned it. I think a lot of us have seen that.
