Amazon plans to build five more datacenters in rural Oregon at estimated cost of $11.8 billion, according to documents filed in Morrow County last week. The project would more than double the cloud colossus' datacenter footprint in the county. Amazon, home of AWS as well as an online shopping empire, operates four datacenters …
Too bad that the 'wee dwarf' (as my ex who was from Cumbernauld would always call her) wants to be rid of the Royal Navy from the future (Soviet) Socialist Republic of Ecosse. I'm sure that she'd give Putin's Navy a warm welcome should they want to use the facilities at Faslane although she'd have to give a bit and let them possibly bring in ships/boats that are nuclear powered and would probably be carrying nuke weapons but as long as they aren't perceived to be the work of 'the English and its allies' all would be well.
Once the Navy has been evicted, the Army and RAF won't be far behind. Watch out for 'Bears' using Lossiemouth.
An independent Scotland is going to be Diego Garcia.
Scotland can't afford to defend the Arctic but also can't afford to offend the Americans. Its economy is going to depend on replacing Ireland as the default English speaking tax haven for US corporations in Europe.
Expect a lot of US hardware being based in the home of the brave.
>Defend the arctic against whom and for whom?
Against Russia's rather large and well funded nuclear submarine fleet and for the USA that currently spends $$$ monitoring the UK-Iceland-Greenland line.
Of course the USA could decide that an independent neutral Scotland is more important and give up worrying about a dozen world destroying vessels having free passage to their shores.
The outlet reports that over the past five years Amazon has secured tax breaks in Morrow County worth $161 million, including $47 million last year. The sprawling online bazaar is the single-largest taxpayer in the county having paid more than $25 million in taxes and fees in 2021, albeit according to Amazon.
Looks like Morrow County is onto a winner there...
Red roses too, and I think to my self, what a wonderful world.
But also wondering about hidden costs. So DCs being large electricity users, often get built where power is cheap and reliable. So Amazon's PR droids will promote their 'Green' credentials, yet roll coal. Luckily the energy market has a solution for this disconnect, and Amazon can probably just buy 'renewable' generation certificates to greenwash their electrons.
