back to article AMD: Our Epyc CPUs helped Mercedes win F1 Constructors' Championship

AMD claims its Epyc CPUs played a role in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team winning last year's Constructors' Championship race. The F1 team rely on second-generation Epyc processors in its servers to power the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software that is critical to modeling and testing the aerodynamics of F1 …

Maybe this isn't the best time to be pushing this line. Whose CPUs do Ferrari use?

They now have a sponsorship deal with Qualcomm and a Snapdragon logo on the cars.

And it looks Mercedes botched exactly the new cars aerodynamics this year.

AMD left Ferrari in 2020 (https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-mercedes-amg-formula-one-2020)

Correct, my mistake. Missed that piece of information. Maybe that's why Ferrari was crap last year...

The Prancing Horse is winning again!

Computing only gets you so far and the chips that power that computing are many and varied. Also, keep in mind that sponsors pay the constructor for placement on the 200mph billboard.

I suspect that Ferrari's other sponsor, AWS, provides most of their computational design power and Qualcomm-Snapdragon is used for in-car electronics.

All the cars use the same engine management unit (It's part of the cost saving drive in F1)

            But the engines are not.

I know, we make several of them.... Ferrari is not one of ours.... currently.

AMD is a sponsor for Ferrari since some time

    1. Sorry that handle is already taken. Silver badge

But not since the 2019 season.

    Two things:

    1) Ferrari are sponsored by Phillip Morris International, who in turn sell advertising space on the cars. Pedants gonna pedant, but it needed to be said.

    2) What CPU did Michael Masi use to make a complete balls up of the last grand prix last year?

Obviously there must have been some Intel inside.
