back to article Procurement guy at Apple allegedly ripped off iPhone giant in $10m+ scam

A now-former Apple employee accused of causing the iGiant to lose more than $10m in a super-scam has been charged with conspiracy, laundering, and tax evasion. Dhirendra Prasad, 52, of San Joaquin County, California, worked at Apple in the US from 2008 to 2018, spending most of his time as a procurer of components and services …

" He allegedly under-reported his income, claiming he banked $1,215,000 "

I've been buying/procuring IT equipment and services for 20+ years now, but damn, who knew Apple paid so handsomely? I guess they have an opening now since this guy's headed to the clink. If anybody at Apple is reading this

(oh, wait, sorry, this is El Reg. What was I thinking? "If anybody at Apple is reading this"...yeah right, more likely Santa's elves and the Easter Bunny are reading this)

      Income

Two things. One, the IRS demands you report ill-gotten gains as income. The IRS doesn't care if you robbed a bank - that's another agency's problem - it wants that income tax from your heist. If you ripped off Apple and you under-declare your income, you'll have the IRS to answer for. So - if the allegations are true - he may have tried to declare some of the scam money as income to avoid the IRS poking around.

Second thing, examples of Apple pay are on levels.fyi FYI.

        Re: Income

I love the way the managers are paid les than the talent, that's exactly how I think it should be, 2 different skill sets rewarded appropriately.

its stupid in the UK where there is this presumption that a management promotion is the be all and end all, many of us engineers enjoy the work and just want to engineer not manage people.

On the managing people point, it should not be about dominating the workers but actually managing them as in making sure they have everything they need to succeed, not crack the whip or provide carrots but actually provide the environment, tools and remove the barriers so the talent can get on and do their thing. more akin to managing actors or singers than be whip cracker.

          Re: Income

In my firm, admittedly in Germany not the UK, but you basically have two paths of development - going the Management route or going the Expert path.

The Expert basically becomes the point of contact for the entire firm on their chosen topic, so carries some real weight. However, Management is definitely the easier route.

Still, I've not managed to convince my boss that the Company needs an Expert on Playing Computer Games or Enjoying a Work/Life balance. So I'm still just an Engineer at this point... :P

            Re: Income

My employer allegedly has something similar here in the UK, however doesn't stop them making me do the management crap as well and forgetting they had the expert path in the first place.

I wonder what the yearly amounts were?

Seems like whenever we see stories like this, whether about some kindly old church secretary with a slot machine addiction who steals $50K from the collection plate in the next town over, or someone like this guy who scams a big corporation out of millions, greed does them in as they shoot for more and more money until it gets noticed. There are probably some people who get away with this stuff and quit while they were ahead, you just don't read about them because they kept their greed at bay and stayed under the radar!

It’s plain stupidity not greed. You only have to ask Quora or Reddit how you would theoretically embezzle millions to give you food for thought on how to hide your ill gotten gains like crypto currency, bank of macau, offshore airbnb etc.

      Depends

On how much you're ripping off the IRS/HMRC/ATO etc for.

And he would have got away with it, if he'd just paid his taxes in full...

Why do I have an image of the IRS as the Scooby Gang?

  4. bronskimac

I agree with DS999, it seems that, so often, miscreants simply don't know to quit while they are ahead. Surely one or two million is enough? Yet they keep at it until they are caught. Personally, I'll stop at around a million ;)

Stealing cash from the Big Boys in America

That’s gotta be worth 500 years in clink.

20 years would almost be worth it, assuming he’s stashed a few million away somewhere overseas.

Nah, stealing from IRS will get you in jail. IRS doesn't care that the guy stole from Apple. They are upset that didn't got their cut.

    He had four years

Why didn’t he just shift the cash, slow and gradual-like, to, say, Brazil, buy a property there, and relax on the beach at Rio? (Other destinations with beaches and less than cooperative extradition laws available.)

Not the first time; won't be the last. People are just too dumb...

Someone beat me to it, but I've got to say it anyway:

From the name of the individual, one has to assume that he never learned the lesson that most of us native 'Murricans know almost from birth (and a privileged few, 'born with a silver spoon in their mouths', eventually learn that they have been doing it from the time of their birth):

It doesn't matter how dishonestly you came by all that money, 'cause the IRS doesn't care, they're not 'morality police'; but you sure as shit better pay Income Tax on all those ill-gotten gains to the IRS, or you WILL end up in the slammer.

Forget the illegal booze; forget the gangland-style murders. Does the name of a famous big-time gangster from the '30s or '40s who went to The Big House---because he was collared ONLY on, and because of, getting 'cross-ways' with the IRS?

Note to all you starry-eyed dreamers who can't wait to make your first bazillion by conning suckers out of their inheritances and retirement portfolios---and you can---by pitching "Quantum Computing": PAY YOUR TAXES.

That's all you'll ever have to pay.
