back to article How can we push more chips, Nvidia thinks: Ah yes, free 3D metaverse-slash-omniverse tools for creators

Nvidia thinks the metaverse, omniverse, or whatever you want to call it will be a vast interconnected galaxy of 3D worlds, and wants you to use its tools to build that animated universe – tied to its RTX GPUs, natch. The chip designer has a marketplace of sorts called Nvidia Studio, which offers or promotes selected hardware …

    Omniverse?

I'm all for faster and more capable chips but software to pseudo-flesh out the imaginary metaverse I can do without.

I love first person RPGs, but as much as I've played the Witcher, I never felt the desire to show up and interact with people as Geralt. And any Yennifers I meet in the made-up-verse will be highly unlikely to be portraying their real selves either.

Besides, how would we arrange the unicorn sex?

    AI,AI=0

"AI controls the whole platform, finding the optimal balance of GPU and CPU power usage, battery discharge, image quality and frame rates all in real time. The result is great playability on battery, with up to 70 per cent more battery life," Fisher said.

Sounds like an algorithm to me.

Nah, the product announcement didn't meet buzzword quota, so they sprinkled a little AI on top.

Is the Metaverse not just Second Life (aka Sadville) in a re-animated (pun intended) form? That one didn't do too well (it was, of course, flooded with porn and porn-like activity (of varying legality) from the word go). How will this be different? (Seriously: if anyone can tell me, I'm quite interested.)

    I still can't understand

Unless it's all "in the cloud", here's to waiting for people to crack those programs to run formats other than USD and without nvidia cards.

    Wait, wait...

I thought *VRML* was the HTML of 3D? Netscape Communicator told me so!

      Re: Wait, wait...

USD still only has one implementation. Yes, Pixar published their source but tying yourself to something that's so complex nobody else has even tried to follow the published specification seems... unwise.

I can understand Apple using Pixar's code, surprised that nVidia are.
