back to article Test this new Linux kernel – but don’t forget Christmas or that you have a family, says Linus Torvalds

Linus Torvalds has confirmed that version 5.16 of the Linux kernel will take a little longer to develop than usual, thanks to Christmas. “Things are calming down, and rc6 is fairly small,” he wrote in his weekly State of the Kernel post. “That's normal for this time in the release schedule, but it's also normal for this time …

Not been a Penguinista for a few years now, I work with Windows, and have MS at home too, so my only concession is a laptop dual booting with Kali and Mint, but that being said, there is STILL that little tingle down the neck, knowing the next RC is about to drop, and I have NO idea why ffs :o)

I am NO Linux Guru, nor even a Windows one truth be told, but it's just nice to hear the 'alternative' OS is still alive and kicking, long may it do so

Just a teeny point.... the 'alternative' OS has a market penetration that makes Windows look like a college hobbyist operating system...

(Every Android phone as well as all sorts of embedded things like routers.)

"the 'alternative' OS has a market penetration".

It's not only phones and stuff like that.

All the TOP500 supercomputers run Linux like all those big guys like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, the Stock exchange run on Linux simply most of the Webb.

But on the desktop it's is still Windows because that is what they sell to consumers or it's Apple in an Apple shop.

What people working at Google and similar have in front of them is still probably Windows.

I know you were talking about the desktop, but how much of Apple Inc is also running on Linux? How much of what is not processed locally in your gadget is processed remotely on Linux?

It's just possible that Apple's fondness for BSD carries over to server land too...

That is what I had expected, but according to an acquaintance involved this is not the case at least not for a lot of stuff.

almost all phones are linux plus most tablets and kindles so you probably have more than you think!

Well my pay as you go Tracfone that is a Samsung phone was getting updates. Will have to look into why it now cannot find the server. I found a link in the update section and see it lists 2 or 3 more updates after the last one I got. So I guess I have something to look into on my days off.

      You're talking about systemd, right?

Does this version successfully run within the systemd container?

Because I've read that recent versions of the kernel don't fully respect systemd and that Torvalds is too arrogant to fix his broken code.

As I cannot see way Linux would adopt to systemd, systemd will have to adopt to Linux as before. But I am sure Linus will listen if there is a good reason.

      No one fully respects systemd.

That Poettering might be too arrogant to fix his own broken code is of course unthinkable. His obvious path is to fork the lazy penguin and, from here on, maintain his own kernel within the glorious SystemD architecture. I really do not understand what is holding him back.

So much hate for systemd. Other OS are available. Use them, if stuff you want on them doesn't exist, develop it.

As the saying goes, build it and they will come. I have a lot of time for BSD for just about anything but one particular group of application support.

Still beats the Redmond alternative, "pass it to consumers and see how much they bark", innit?
