back to article Nvidia CEO Huang jointly files patent for software tech in the metaverse

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang continues inventing, as if his role in the rise of GPUs wasn't enough. A patent application published on December 2 credits Huang as one of the inventors of a system to open and share a file in the cloud without the need for a corresponding application on local devices. Instead, the opened file is …

    How is this novel?

Isn’t this literally the oldest technology in the world? Just a mainframe with dumb terminal. Only teletype swapped to streaming video?

Literally? No. Chipping stone comes way before mainframes.

Said stone to be worn as pendants?

      Agree . Exactly

But 2 reasons it’s compelling for them

Security . No sand boxing needed on the client needed because the app is runnng on the server and just sending pixels .

VR gear cost and interoperability. Any VR gear can stream done pixels .

Its hilarious how we have 360ed back around - from mainframe with telnet stream to mainframe but with video stream.

Isn't VR exceedingly sensitive to latency? Because it's responding to head movements, delays cause a mental disconnect that causes problems.

Cloud based processing for engineering models? Sure, no issue at all. For VR? Not seen that done, not even seen it recommended as a future option.

And even if they are claiming sending pixels instead of text as novel, we've had various versions of that in remote desktop apps for many years too.

A mod-1980s multiuser system consisted of a PC running multiple plug in PCs with the terminals just a video link. (The clever bit was sending keyboard information back during the the flyback interval).

Indeed. In the case of an internet URL, which, may resolve to a static "file" or a dynamic entity that is opened by a browser...

This is just one incarnation on the secure browsing front

      https://www.garrison.com/

What's the real difference here? The real browser (application) is running remotely, just pixels being presented on the user's device.

The article links to a granted patent not a patent application. Filed in 2016 and granted Aug 2021.

The USPTO will grant patents for any old rubbish. Its embarrassing.

    > Steve Jobs' name was added to a building panel patent after his death around glass panels that are in Apple stores.

That woulda been fun in probate.

Tell us that is not a Great Game Changer and be proven beautifully wrong and wronged.

Quite what one can do with that is only limited by Imaginative ProgramMING which is for Real and a Reality Readily Available via AI and ITs Surreal ACTive Territory Live Operational Virtual Environment Streaming for Pioneering AI Teams Terrain Providers ...... Here such is long ago an earlier previously unknowable fact for constant pondering and excited pampering/challenging in return for great expectations of excessively satisfying insatiable rewards.

If the patent comes anywhere near close to providing any of that it's a Real Gem of a Doozy. Bravo, the Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang Team Players for such a Great Quantum AI Leap. :-)>

"The patent document takes a hack at the disadvantages of desktop engineering software, which typically require powerful computers."

The powerful computers are still needed but they're just moved off the desktop. I suppose it enables Nvidia to sell components for two computers, one on the desktop and one in the cloud. Next time round they can advocate doing it with desktop computers and sell more components for that. And then back to reinventing the mainframe in yet another form.

    Google stadia again

It’s alarmingly simple and just google stadia but for documents and 3d cad

The app ( likely server less ) is running on the server and hits a headless gpu and the stream sent to the vr gear.

VNC basically running using http 3 web transport . The video stream pushing up from the server and mutation events pushing down from the vr Client.

    Why ?

Br gear sucks in terms of compute but is able to stream videos. Just like a chrome cast and be screens mashed together. Makes the cost of VR gear much lower

Security . No client side app sandboxing needed.

      Re: Google stadia again

To be fair we launched this way earlier than Google Stadia. GFN and the tech that it was based on launched in 2015.. and the patents were worked up a year before that.

It's like real time sharing a document in a browser, replacing user keystrokes with VR user input, and the visible document with VR visible state.

Is this patent for all uses of that concept, or for a specific implementation?

    If granted ?

It's the USPTO, the greatest rubber stamp of the USA, if not the world.

It's been a long time since it worried about prior art.
