back to article Azure Emissions Dashboard shows how you and Microsoft are slowly killing the planet with your cloud workloads

Microsoft has made its Emissions Impact Dashboard - formerly known as Sustainability Calculator and designed to measure the carbon impact of cloud workloads - generally available. If that sounds familiar, it may be because Google this week made a big deal of its Carbon Footprint preview, which claims to "measure, report and …

      Re: Cloud

Well, someone is getting rich. Not the users or customers, of course. So, business as usual, one might snarkily say. Selling a dream is always good for the bottom line. Clouds are always associated with dreaming, so it is a natural match. The users and customers dream of riches an the owners get golden rain.

And if you can sell an extra service how much bad you are doing to the mother earth, then that is even better. More services sold using up more and more resources. And that results in a better bottom line. See, it works as planned.

"reward customers for committing to long-term usage in advance"

In my innocence, I thought a primary advantage of cloud was dynamically flexible capacity in the face of the unexpected. If you're driven to book capacity in advance, you're just renting someone else's computers.

    License included

And of course, you have to commit to a 3 yr term for that Power BI licence and you cant take that licence anywhere and you cant sell it.

    Crappy modern languages

Perhaps if the made clients code in more efficient languages like Rust or C instead of power hungry Python or Javascript, then power usage would go down, too?

      Hear Hear!!

For decades the parole has been that developer time is expensive, machine time is cheap, so we should use higher level languages.

The green agenda and "cloud computing" mandates that a high efficiency languages like C and C++ directly translates to greener computing!!

Fewer CPU cycles = less carbon emission!!

    On-Prem Emissions Calculation

Despite all of our data telemetry that Microsoft slurps they can only estimate on-prem emissions from one of three user-selected levels. Shame really as it might have actually been useful.

    Hmm.

"Microsoft's Emissions Impact Dashboard is a Power BI Pro application that requires setup and cost"

And how much additional power will having *that* on the go consume?
