Twitter has suspended multiple accounts purporting to be Amazon warehouse workers defending the mega-souk’s working conditions and speaking out against unionization. All eyes are on the e-commerce giant as thousands of workers in America try to form a union. The corporation's PR people also just admitted they scored "an own …

    Amazon and US Unions ?

Why are unions such as a problem for Amazon US ?

If I have understood correctly unions already exist in Amazon UK.. So why all the fuss in the US ? It appears as though there is something I am not seeing yet , or haven't read about yet.

The problem is power to the people - the bigwigs don't like that.

A union is something that is going to argue for better working conditions, less stress, longer bathroom breaks and so and so forth forever. That will make a dent in profitability, you see, so Bezos is doing his damndest to avoid that.

Re: Amazon and US Unions ?

A factor is the dynamic between the unions and the corporations.

Unions were born out of the awful working conditions that arose during the industrial revolution.

Populism then gave them some momentum and they then became powerful by having some rights enshrined in law, so then there is push back from the corporations which then slowly moved the power balance back in the other direction.

        And so the dynamic continues.

The UK's population density is 8 times higher than the US. For companies that provide shipping services, cell phone coverage, Internet access, etc., the expenses are much higher in the US than in Europe. This shouldn't be a surprise every time.

      @Khaptain

Whenever I hear of unions I always remember the joke-

A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in

Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.

When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam,

      "Is this a union house?"

"No," she replied, "I'm sorry it isn't."

"Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"

"The house gets $80 and the girls get $20," she answered.

Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the

street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded, "Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules."The man asked, "And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"

"The girls get $80 and the house gets $20" the madam replied.

"That's more like it!" the union man said.

He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room,

and pointed to a stunningly attractive blonde.

      "I'd like her," he said.

"I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madam.

Then she gestured to a 92-year old woman in the corner, "but Ethel here

has 67 years seniority and according to union rules, she's next."

Actually copy and pasted from a different website (google search until I found it) because there is no way I wanted to type that in and get something wrong that some twit would come troll about.

At least you've increased your sources. Second sourcing is a good industry practice.

I'll bow to your ever greater knowledge, but your other posts are way funnier. (Just catching up on them now.)

But I can't work out if you are for or against unions at Amazon from this one. I'll have to go read up what you think on the Add-a-Myth Institute'd website or "Seekin' Alpha". (Is it?)

Are you serious! I knew you were a fan/pet troll but you really go looking for me. Not sure if I am flattered or creeped out.

Gonna let you in on a secret (dont tell anybody). It was a joke! One I am reminded of when people start arguing over unions. I mean no hidden message, nothing for my fans (trolls) to have to find the secret meaning, just a joke I am reminded of and so shared for the amusement of others.

What surprises me is how that has the attention of a coward and my troll. Or did you also post the AC comment?

Why are unions such as a problem for Amazon US ?

It's not so much that they're a problem; they're just cheaper to fight than to have, at least at the moment, in Amazon's estimation. So they'll fight them. It's all about estimated return on investment.

Because anti-union sentiment is relatively strong in the US (compared to many other countries), fighting unionization is often successful here, which raises the expected return on the investment in union-busting. If Amazon thought unionization here was more or less inevitable, it would determine that the more economical course would be to make nice.

    Victorian Mill Owners

Amazon is just like the Victorian mill owners who became stupendously rich on the back of exploiting their works. I am sure there are many other examples as well it just appears that Amazon is the lowest of the low.

Presumable people end up working for them because there are simply no other jobs.....

Unfortunately in that environment there is only ever going to be one winner. The employees at the levels we are talking about are simply disposable objects with the only value in how many bits they can pick or drops they can make.
