back to article VMware devolves hyperconverged infrastructure – compute nodes without storage are now a thing

VMware has unconverged hyperconverged infrastructure with a new cut of its vSAN virtual storage array. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) became popular because it replaced discrete servers, storage arrays and storage area networks with “nodes” that were usually servers equipped with many disk slots. Scaling HCI meant adding …

    Really? This is news?

This is the infrastructure we had 10 years ago. Compute nodes and shared storage.

      But it isn't....

This isn't a large legacy SAN with bespoke networking (FC). This is primarily HCI but with the flexibility to present storage to additional nodes, which is awesome if you have a decent storage pool and wish to extend some of that spare capacity to nodes outside the vSAN.

I see this as a welcome capability to be able to grow within my current storage pool.

And so the wheel continues to turn as yet another "old" way of doing sensible things is hijacked to be that latest fad.

Maybe some of us have just been in the same industry for too long. Looking at staff turnover 10 year is a long time so it is easy to sell something old dressed up as new as people will have never seen it before.

I suppose the next new thing will be some sort of modular box that has disks in it. You can then connect this to the "compute box" when you need some extra storage. Maybe I should get a patent on the concept.

    hyperdiverged infrastructure?

HPE have already bagged disagregated hyperconverged infrastructure for Nimble. Marketing balony.
