back to article BT parachutes in former HSBC exec to run new Digital unit

BT has hired former HSBC exec Harmeen Mehta to head up a newly created Digital unit, overseeing the internal shift to digital systems along with the incubation of tech platforms, products, and services. Mehta, who served for the past seven years as Group CIO at Indian telco Bharti Airtel, will act as chief digital and …

    So, pretty much anything then?

I can't see what this group are going to achieve if they meet 3 times a year? Perhaps "Yes, let's do more cloud and A.I.?"

It's so wooly. Perhaps it's a good thing. Perhaps they will get off Oracle Cloud (did anyone know that's a thing?) and start using GCP, AWS or Azure (in that order).

    WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

BT’s Cloud Compute is a Fucking amateurish shambles of a product... Said as a former customer who ditched them for AWS.

The difference is night and day.

Even internal parts of BT have ditched them for AWS... it’s that bad.

the TAB governance is going to advise BT board 3 times a year. IT and digital is being split from Howard and under someone with the remit to transform them to cloud. BT currently runs lots of legacy services on-premise (including Oracle) and they want to do more in the public cloud in either AWS/GCP/Azure (in that order). BT have roughly 4k developers and 4k partner developers all based in India.

    Digital?

If BT hasn’t done anything “Digital” yet it’s no wonder my broadband via OpenReach is so fucking diabolical.

Digital. The most misused word in IT ever.

      Re: Digital?

Digital Transformation is business speak for making loads of people redundant.

BT cycle from expansion/diversification to ‘back to basics’ on a cycle akin to Jupiter orbiting the Sun.

Previous companies built up/acquired now flogged off or assimilated - BT Fleet, Retail Systems, Legal Systems, Dabs.com, Property etc. Indeed BT Property built up, flogged, bought back, expanded, flogged again. Fucking madness.

Fucking hell. Is there like a 20 page "Idiot's Guide To Senior Management" and on page 1 its

    1. Sell off assets

    2. Make people redundant

Its all we ever seem to see with big tech companies now.

In case anyone is wondering, after page 1 the rest of the book is a list of things to do with the big bonus payout these asshats are expecting to walk off with.

I don wonder if the pubs are open

BT have recruited two Board members from basically SIM card sales companies in Sub Saharan African and India. I do not see anything that would equip them for the running and changing BT. Wish them well but the culture of BT still has not embraced the world of software. Leadership is obsessed with getting rid of people and not with better products and services.

BT and HSBC. A match made in Hades.
