back to article Pick an end, any end: Lost that critical Christmas cable? We know how you feel

It's that Christmas feeling: scrabbling around for the correct cable to attach a poppet's new toy to the family TV. Getting into the swing of things, today's bork, the ninth in our Twelve Borks of Christmas (12BoC) series*, sees something similar on a screen outside Waitrose. Nominative Determinism*

With a name like Decaux, it was inevitable the family would be into outdoor advertising.

One might expect that their signs should be displaying nativity scenes at this time of the year, as in "Come take a dekho at JC".

But arguably there is no Christmas in Hinduism, hence "no connection".

*The funniest example IMHO being Splatt and Weedon, who were apparently prominent urologists.

While I am here, let me wish all commentards a Happy Gregorian New Year.

I’d be intrigued as to what the error might mean

Looks like a 3.5mm jack and an HDMI or USB plug. Scratching my head on that one...

The 3.5 looks like a plug to me.

It just needs a credit card and internet connection. Bizarrely such a connector does exist (others available on Amazon and Ebay). Perhaps it was hinting at a late Christmas pressie?

A HDMI, DisplayPort or maybe just USB plug that allows mating with a 3.5 audio plug? The error image isn't showing the other required component: a large hammer.

    My guess...

...is that the screen thinks there is no input and the screens OS (such that it is) is graphically indicating "No Connection", ie the source device is so borked that the screen can't even tell if the plug is in.

    it is an allegory

of what happens since Brexit when you try to connect "continental" systems (using EU standards) with "insular" ones (using no discernible standard)
