back to article China offers world its COVID QR Code movement passport at G20 Leaders' Meeting

Chinese president Xi Jinping appears to have offered the world the QR code-powered system used to determine movement rights inside his nation during the COVID-19 pandemic. China's scheme sees citizens use an app to generate a colour-coded QR code. Those whose phones display a green code are allowed entry into public places …

    So... everyone has a DNA test and your government shares it with others in a QR code? Err... not my favourite idea actually.

    “We need to further harmonize policies and standards”

    Harmonize is code for Weaponize when used by the Chinese Government.

    I say “Pooh” to that.

      Re: “We need to further harmonize policies and standards”

      I used to work on international standards. "Harmonize" usually means "agree on the lowest common denominator." Just like "needs further study" means "no".

    An authoritarian government wants to store, control and manipulate deeply personal health data for individuals around the world. I'm sure absolutely nothing could go wrong, carry on!

      Exactly. With all the hoopla around Huawei for the past four years, I can really this becoming a worldwide standard - not.

      Man, if the US has spouted "national security" concerns about TikTok, then what is it going to say about this ?

        I'm not sure they're saying they want to store the health details.

        I thought the idea was that my country issues me with an "OK" status and QR code. China, or others, can then check if that status is OK via the QR code. That doesn't require them to store my DNA, just to check with the issuing authority that I'm OK to travel.

        Of course it will probably get subverted as our beloved leaders will use terrorism and thinking of the children to get their grubby paws on our data.......

    Multi Apps are available

    "It has since become ubiquitous, racked up billions of uses and is now to be adopted in Hong Kong."

    The HK Government is currently promoting a different app, which relies on users scanning a QR code at participating venues, not the other way around like Xi Jinping's app.

    I'm confused.

    Coming Soon...

    Having to flash your phone is just so inconvenient. A subcutaneous chip (inserted at birth, naturally) that you can never lose and that is scanned at every building entrance/ street corner is under development.

      Back in my student days, a foreign student told me that in his country they had colour-coded id cards. Life could be difficult if your id was a wrong colour.

      Here's how it might work in the UK, or maybe just England in a few years.

      * Blue - for the aristocracy (blue-blooded!) or other privileged types;

      * Yellow - middle class whingers e.g. liberal democrats;

      * Red - Socialist Idlers Party etc.

      * White - no evidence against you yet.

        Why not transfer the color code to patches you wear on your clothing? Triangular ones, for example.

      Re: Coming to a country near you

      Back in the old days before people just nipped off the Costa del Whotsit for a weekend you have to have vaccination certificates to enter many countries. It was part of the ritual of travel -- you'd have to get your shots about two to three weeks before taveling and the record of your inoculations would be entered in your passport.

      As for the rest, in the UK its already at this point. Everyone's got a 'government ID' you can sign in on to get tax records, passports, licenses and what-have-you. If you're out and about and become interesting to the authorities and can't readily prove who you are then they'll keep you until they find out (typically a work of a moment). Eveything's joined up. Its really convenient (and all the frogs are merriily bobbing around in the boiling water because nobody noticed what's been going on these last few decades.....bit by bit......)

    Well, they failed to get Huawei into every country in order to snaffle all the data, so here's an alternative option, made to look like it's from the goodness of their heart. We're not all stupid, Xi!
