back to article Google won’t let Australia have shiny new toys unless it picks apart pay-for-news plan

Google has paused the rollout of its News Showcase product in Australia, because it says it could be unworkable under the nation’s proposed pay-for-news plan. Australia has created a “Draft news media bargaining code” that would allow local news publishers to seek compensation for stories that are linked to by Google and …

    Aussie guvmint are muppets.

NewsCorp are puppeteers for Aussie guvmint. The two are interconnected. The conglomerate supports the incumbent government by running smear campaigns against it's political enemies and overlooking corruption reporting while the government rubs it's back by protecting it's monopoly, helping kill off competitors and now increasing it's revenue.

Been going on for too long, it's a sad state of affairs.

      Centre-right government.

      I prefer the term “Murdocracy”

      More accurately reflects reality.

    Keep going Google....

Keep showing what bunch of dicks you are.

Look we WERE going to pay all along, we just didn't tell you...but now we are taking our ball back.

Keep it up Google, you are making those antitrust lawsuits easier and easier everyday.

While I wouldn't rule out Australia filing an anti-trust lawsuit for their favourite news media monopoly, it might be difficult to come up with a legal case that paints Google as the bad guy in this when Murdoch rusn the existing monopoly.

Whereupon Google simply bails from Oz. It’s not exactly a major market, after all.

" to create and curate high-quality content for a different kind of online news"

Basically they would work for Google now, to bring even those users who directly access the news site to Google instead....

If only there was a way

Perhaps someone needs to come up with a robots.txt format to describe the payment and republishing terms of stuff on a site...

Re: If only there was a way

If news sites wanted to stop Google from "stealing their content", they can block Google really easily.

That's not what they want. They want make Google buy their content. This is interesting because end-users aren't that interested in paying for it, which is why the legacy media industry is dying.

      So... good luck with that!

      Two awful businesses fighting!

And nothing of value was lost...

Come on guys. It's a new Google product. It'll be end-of-lifed by sometime in early 2022 anyway - having never got out of beta - and Google having already launched at least 2 slightly different but similar services in 2021...

Except all those lovely police brutality videos of them stomping on people's heads or wrapping apartment blocks with barbed wire to keep all the residents in.

Bunch a fascists. They are off my retirement list. A lot has changed since I lived there 20 years ago.

Getting news filtered by Google does not seem an attractive proposition when there is such a variety of news media available on line.

The American Murdoch's stable is not among my current selections.

      News filtering

I don't want to be in a search bubble, especially for news.

I use a VPN AND Google News - it seems to work OK as I'm still presented with the filth from Fake News Corp even though I never knowingly click on it (and have a script to block it if I mistakenly select it)

      Seems to work OK

If I understand Google's petulant position I'll still be presented with Australian "news" as I'm not "in" Australia

    Seriously Who Cares

Any news you read is slanted to a political view point.

Getting news from google yahoo Facebook is just plain stupid.

Use as many sources as possible and remember that in all of this YOU are the least important entity in the chain

    Everyone else has an agenda

      #media outlets >> #news sources

So much cut and paste, so little investigative work.

What variance there is usually consists of non-investigate slant or opinion to spice up the click-ability factor.

Whereas in the old days, there was also a lack of variance, but a much smaller number of outlets.
