back to article All it took was a global pandemic confining millions to their homes to remind businesses how much they appreciate the IT crowd

There are lies, damn lies, and tech vendor surveys, but the latest from hyperconverged specialist Nutanix might raise a wry smile. It turns out IT is important after all. In the Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) 2020 report, 76 per cent of respondents said the pandemic has forced businesses to "view their IT organisations more …

To remind businesses how much they appreciate the IT crowd

    I'll believe that when:

    1) The mantra of "You know IT's done a good job, cause nobody hears about it" finally dies

    2) They start giving annual 20-40% pay rises

Unless of course you work in education. Then all your hard work at setting up Office 365, managing and training users, resetting passwords on a daily basis is totally ignored - or worse, the teachers are getting the credit for it.

Meanwhile John and Susan in marketing are continuing to put the business in jeopardy with a collection of customer details/leads/random contacts gathered against GDPR and held insecurely on AWS.

True. I miss the old days when John and Susan would just put the collection of customer details/leads/random contacts on an unencrypted flash drive and leave it on the bus/train/restaurant table/random public place.

RE: putting people on Office 365

You forgot the bit where after doing that the e-mail team is "let go" as we don't need them.

Until whatever passes for normality returns, then back to the status quo, an expensive pain in the ar#e doing a job the Board consider would be better and more cost effectively done by Crapita et al. Make the most of it folks.

    "Appreciate"??? Not this droid!

After a torrid couple of years as one-man security dept for a firm with turnover well over the £1bn level (5000 users, financial services), they hired the most unpleasant, bullying, mendacious, clue-void I've ever had the profound misfortune to work for as head of security. Three months trying to diplomatically save him from his own stupidity and ignorance followed by three months writing brain-dump documentation, followed by redundancy at the end of last year. (Did you know the legal minimum is now two weeks' pay per year of service? Me neither.) Six months later the firm had worked out just how awful he was and how much wool he'd pulled over their eyes about the value for money he'd got for the shiny new multi-million pound budget they gave him, and fired him. Oh well, at least I have the satisfaction of knowing he's also completely fucked financially!

As the local users of the last place I worked at found out, really learned to appreciate what they had had, when the local IT Infrastructure Team got laid off & everything shifted to Corp in the big city.

Icon - Oh the hilarity as I sat back & watched as half the remaining IT Team, struggled with three times the work & hardware requests for those that now needed to WFH two weeks later.
