back to article The WAN of opportunity: Funnily enough, home Wi-Fi sales see 'sudden spike' amid pandemic, not so much for biz

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven fruitful for the consumer Wi-Fi sector, according to analyst house ABI Research, with shipments this year set to increase and long-term growth forecast. In total, the sector is expected to ship 223 million units worldwide in 2020, up 10 million or five per cent on the previous year, across the …

Hm. While i did switch over from cable internet to fiber, The Router remains the Same.

Any of the new routers past the R7000 do not have the granular security / QoS that i want, especially when working from home. Work laptops get the highest prio, kids' streaming devices get the lowest. And so on. Based on MAC address.

And i don't see any router (newer than that R7000) do that trick.

Sure, you could say 'but now you got all the bandwidth you need', etc. But it doesnt feel right not to have that in place.

Anybody knows of a router that does that? Then i'll happily jump on the bandwagon described here :-)

Get a pfSense or something alike

There's no need to get an all-in-one designed for the average Joe without a clue about networking, and with very simple needs.

I have VDSL now, I got a device that can work as a simple bridge. Behind it a pfSense (mine is built on a Supermicro embedded server) does all the routing, NAT, firewallling and prioritization I need, and more - i.e. pfBlocker-NG to block unwanted contents.

WiFi is delivered by dedicated APs. This way I can also add or replace devices as needed.

Anyway, in these months I didn't need new APs.... having an Ethernet network delivers all the speed I need. Probably some people bought expensive routers/APs when all they needed was a $2.99 cable.... but it's true "consumer" devices no longer have Ethernet ports....
