back to article Oracle tempts users to run its cloud in their own data centres – for a mere '$6 million' commitment

Oracle's new on-premises cloud product has prompted concern among commentators, who've said it requires a strong financial commitment and could shift customers to higher cost deals. Big Red is now selling an on-prem set-up of its Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud, completely managed by the company itself, using the same …

Oracle's Louis said: "That's all based on trust."

Yes. Because Oracle is the company with the best historical record of trusting its customers.

    Right, pull the other one.

      Yeah, and vice versa!

The only thing I'd definitely trust Oracle to do would be to shaft everyone else at the earliest available opportunity.

    Surely not

"Other commentators said they were concerned that the switch could drive up costs for customers in the long term."

Oracle wouldn't use such tactics, would they?

Can you imagine Oracle saying "your contract doesn't cover that but for only 20% more we can upgrade it."

Can you imagine a similar conversation taking place at least yearly?

If they do it's only because they are trying to maintain their very thin 95% profit margins.

Amazon AWS Outposts must be Pissing themselves laughing at this ... though hopefully not in the machine hall.

Is anyone using Oracle's cloud offerings?

    If so, why?

I've seen a few customers use it for business intelligence for a while,

      called Oracle Analytics Cloud,

then the customer discovers Portgres on AWS...

      AC to protect the guilty.

      Re: Oracle Cloud

I tried to sign up for their free cloud DB offering that they announced a couple of years ago, just to poke around and see what had changed in Oracland since 10g. The confirmation codes they send during the sign-up process simply don't work, and when I tried again six months later it was exactly the same story.

None of their support team could get it to work either, so I told them I'd probably rather not touch a database product made by a company that can't operate an account registration webpage successfully and bid them adieu.

    Lol.

This new world of Cloud based elastic infrastructure and workloads sure has saved me lots of money by keeping all of my super elastic Cloud based infrastructure on-prem.

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose...

    I've had a great idea

I've invented a steel shaft with a point at one end and a flat bit at the other. I can manufacture millions of them for very little cost. I'll call them No More Glue.

for at least a $6m commitment

Isn't that basically just some legalese to ensure lock-in?

By requiring a certain minimum over a period of time, it makes it harder to jump ship to an alternative that can offer better, or cheaper, or both.

But only if it has blockchain. And quantum computing.

Quantum computing? Damn damn damn, I thought we were still with AI on the hype-list... off for a quick rewrite.

"Other commentators said they were concerned that the switch could drive up costs for customers in the long term"

Since this is Oracle that we're talking about, costs and prices going up is a given.

It's a clever name; you can always see the future with Ellison and friends.
