    Don't Yanks always blather on grandiosely about the Right to a Speedy Trial being one of the hallmarks of their stirling legal system ?

      Yes, but it can be waived by the defendant. The article doesn't say what his lawyers said about this, probably they don't want to be going to court at this time either so I doubt they raised a fuss.

    Won't this just be immediate release?

    Save for the mental health concerns, if the maximum penalty is ten years and he has been behind bars for 3 now, surely he is getting close to the average parole period for these charges?

      Parole, Early Release, and Time Served in the U.S.

      "Parole" at the federal level in the United States may be limited.

      There are, however, "early release", "supervised release", and "time served" provisions.
