In late 2018, Shenzhen startup Royole released the world's first commercially available foldable phone – the Royole Flexpai. Reviews weren't great, with one journo describing it as "charmingly awful". It only really entered the public consciousness due to the antics of Escobar Inc, which rebadged the Flexpai and sold it for £300 …

    Classically awful paragraph

Not really, it could have been worse: they didn't use "optimize market synergies" in the entire paragraph.

But keep reading that press release, it's bound to be in there somewhere.

      Re: Classically awful paragraph

How about "A new paradigm to optimize market synergies moving forward."?

I got pitched an investment "opportunity" from a wannabe startup this afternoon ... On the bright side, there is still beer.

    But is "foldable" any good?

I've always had a lot of complaints when I demonstrate for my thing folds up.

    Regards,

    Dick.

Mines fine both folded and in full size. But always feels a bit flimsy when I between....

Mine tends to look like the image from El Reg's article. Definitely not good.

It's not the first foldable phone.

My folding FlipPhone is over a decade old.

    Footprint?

"This means the device will be flatter when folded, thereby reducing the footprint in your pocket."

Not it won't. Footprint is a measure of area, not volume. It simply means your trouser bulge won't be so big. And that's not something an early adopter with too much cash to splash is going to want.
