back to article Who needs an iPad Pro? Look everyone, Windows Terminal has mouse input

In a week that saw confirmation that Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 would have its kernel pulled from the base Windows 10 image, another preview of Windows Terminal put in an appearance. Terminal fans may be forgiven for being a little surprised. After all, February's v0.9 was to have been the last to receive new features ahead …

    That translucency stuff?

Linux has had that for ages now. Move on, nothing to see.

And when you resize a *nix terminal emulator, it doesn't screw up the instance of Vim or SSH running in it.

        Pfft. Translucency?

The cool kids are now using green/amber-screen terminals with scan lines, wonky horizontal sync and spherical CRT screen distortion:

The first thing I attach to a new un*x system here at Chez jake is a so-called "dumb" terminal and Model M keyboard, and then send it a nice friendly login ... Contrary to the late Mr. Jobs opinion, serial ports still have a use when it comes to modern systems. It's amazing how useful a shell prompt is if the GUI goes titsup on "the main screen" (rare as that is these days). I also do most of my typing on a terminal. Fewer distractions.

Serial consoles also live on in embedded systems as well ... off with the GUI! :-D

But I like GUIs ... they allow me to easily overlap and utilize many terminal sessions. Throw in multiple desktops, one for admin, one for coding in C, one for perl, one for pr0namusement, one with what looks like ExcelPowerpoint for when the Boss is watching, one for ElReg (and other wholesome pursuits), etc., and what's not to like?

This is so useful, now can they just bring back the old start menu so I don't have to type in the name of the application I want to start?
