back to article Microsoft pushes out fresh version of '90s throwback PowerToys suite with plenty of fixes – and one nasty bug

Microsoft emitted a fresh version of its '90s PowerToys resurrection on GitHub last night, and followed it up with a bug fix in record time. The release itself was an otherwise humdrum affair for those accustomed to the proddery possible with the Windows 95 incarnation back in the day. Version 0.15 turned up with almost 100 …

Don't hold your breath waiting for MS to do that. Instead, download and install OpenShell:

And a half decent file manger, not the crap that's windows filemanager. Come on all the other ones have had tabbed or split view for years now. I shouldn't have to download a third-party solution to deliver what is standard on just about every other file manager these days.

        You mean winfile.exe?

Absolutely, it is only fit, just, for picking a file to look at. The only people that think it is useful are those that use the desktop to store files.

For everything else I would recommend Directory Opus (though it does cost a few quid). I've no interest in GPsoft, but I've been using it for a long time and it is the second thing I install on any new machine, after Firefox.

+1 for DOpus - I’ve been (willingly) paying for updates since I first installed it on my Miggy 1200

Directory Opus (Pro Version) is the one I use - https://www.gpsoft.com.au/

If only Open Shell would fix their bugs, like pinned objects reappearing after they have been deleted.

      Coincidently

I've just finished setting up Widows on my new laptop. Open Shell plus Winaero Tweaker go a long way (though not all the way) to making it not look like Win 10. (I don't exactly want to make it look like Win 7 because I hate the start menu in a box thing).

    Good ol' times indeed

    Amen.

Besides - TweakUI was a compulsory piece of Windows back then, because it allowed, among others, to rein in some of the more annoying/dangerous initiatives of Windows (like for instance blindly auto-starting anything you might connect to it). It wasn't made for the casual user, but definitely made the casual user's Windows computers more user-friendly and secure. It would be great if the new TweakUI would gain similar powers, instead of being solely about polishing the GUI's bells and whistles.
