back to article Coronavirus to decimate server supply chain, analysts claim: Sales to fall 10% as factories stay shut

Global server shipments are forecast to drop nearly 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 as the coronavirus epidemic hits production lines in China, according to new figures from Digitimes Research. Resident researchers at the Taiwanese-based outfit previously forecast growth of 1.2 per cent in the first quarter of the …

"public health experts banned Foxconn [..] from restarting production at the factories in Zhengzhou"

Are those workers going to still have a salary ? They already get paid a pittance, I hope this won't be an excuse for Foxconn to just shut the door and leave them in the cold.

I hope those laid-off still get income but I don't believe it should fall to Foxconn to have to keep paying salaries when it's not their fault they are shut down. It's for the state to look after the welfare of its citizens.

That's the first time in a long time ...

... that I've seen the word "decimated" used properly.

      Pedant alert!

It literally refers to chopping off the hand of the tenth male in the village (thanks to Julius Caesar), so here it is merely metaphorically correct. We hope.

It's not a Latin word, it's an English word.

The Latin root is "decimat", meaning removal of a tenth. The Roman army disciplinary action of drawing every tenth man by lot and putting them to death (not removal of hands!) was first called decimation in English around 1600. It was also briefly used in English similarly to the word "tithe", also starting in around 1600.

As a side note, most linguists consider the word to have mutated into the more common "utterly destroyed" meaning. Some of us pedants disagree.

Nah. Most linguists are wrong then. It's meant what it means for 20 centuries.

Moreover, the evolution of language should make it *more* expressive, not less so.

So the ranks of the pedants swells by one. [grin]

Oh. I thought it meant reduce TO a tenth, ie destroy 90% of something. You live and learn, thanks!

The pot is half full !

So because of Coronavirus factories producing servers are being shut, resulting in a supply shortage, which can only mean if the demand is there for a much larger production, a sellers market - so canny manufacturers (not based in China) can expect an increase in revenues and profits...

    Finally...

Came here as a poster above did to give my hearty support for decimated being used “properly!”

Next I wish they’d revert to using bricked to actually mean effectively turned into a brick like a firmware flashing error, etc. rather than just requiring a software reinstall/update a la Patch Tuesday.

I'm really trying to feel sorry for all those companies...

... that outsourced their component supplies to chinese companies putting local companies out of business and locals out of work just to save a few pennies in order to increase dividend payouts. I really am trying...

    .....

    ....

Nope, not working. To hell with them. Perhaps some overpaid CEO might get a clue and support local and national businesses but I won't hold my breath.

    STOP IT NOW!

"There are now more than 40,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus"

I think you may find there are several billion cases of coronavirus, what with it being a family of viri that most of the planet have had at one time or another.

What needs to stop is the use of viri as a plural of virus.

        Re: STOP IT NOW!

I disagree. What we should do instead is to make "Cyri" the plural form of "Cyrus", and "I" the plural form of "Us". Latin Uber Alles! (Did I get that wrong? OK, good.)
