back to article Having flogged off its data centers, AT&T cozies up to Microsoft, IBM to keep it running

AT&T has announced “strategic alliances” with both IBM and Microsoft, as it looks to capitalize on cloud computing without getting its hands dirty. In the beginning of 2019, the world’s largest telco completed the sale of its data center business to Brookfield infrastructure, offloading 31 facilities for $1.1bn, to become the …

    Outsourcing

So, the data centers are outsourced, the running of the systems is already outsourced, all the equipment is outsourced as is most of the network design, the call centers are almos certainly outsourced.

My guess is that AT&T is a marketing company.

A financial operations firm first, with communications a side show. I watched Southwestern Bell gobble up my money at exorbitant rates for bad services, and then it all came clear when they gobbled up the other Bells using that hoarded money. They certainly didn't spend it on equipment, but were rather aiming for the brass ring called "AT&T".

If you were one of the Bells that actually improved your infrastructure well that actually made you a takeover target. You no longer had the cash to defend yourself and now could be bought using your improved facilities as a justification to the banks.

AT&T have outsourced their IT to IBM for a long time, same as IBM outsources their network admin to AT&T.

The only thing of news here is adding Microsoft to the equation. Anything to do with AT&T is just re-signing/extending of expired contracts.

Seems the only winner here is Microsoft, 3 big US Multinationals, two of which have totally lost any ability to support their own company, and are in a race to the bottom of self-destruction.

If AT&T had any sense, they'd use the opportunity to transition all their IT to Microsoft, and ditch IBM altogether.

    Remember - Cloud computing

Is nothing more than putting your crap on someone else's computer that other people are using , and expecting the owners to care more about it than you do..
