back to article Italian data protector makes Facebook an offer it might want to refuse: A €1m fine for Cambridge Analytica data leak

The Italian data protection regulator has fined Facebook a cool €1m for alleged privacy offences connected to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. We have a Matteo Renzi to join Clegg (and many others, we change them so often we have a large backlog). Get it before the offer is augmented with Salvini and Di Maio.

    WTF?

    Just pocket change

... fined Facebook a cool €1m for alleged privacy offences ...

That's just pocket change for the scumbags.

Much more reasonable would be a cool €1m for each one of the 200,000 affected Italian citizens.

The only way to keep these bastards in check (not just FB) is to cut deep into the obscene profits they make from selling people's personal data to other corporations and the likes of Cambridge Analytica which, quite surely is just the tip of the shitberg.

€1m is really nothing but a bad joke compared to what they've raked in.

    O.

It'll take Fecebook a whole 21 minutes to make that money back. I wonder what the court proceedings cost.

Which is why GDPR allows much bigger fines. It's understandable that people want to complain about trivial fines that won't achieve anything, but doing so when we've already introduced new laws specifically to correct the problem seems a bit pointless.

It seems the Italians don't value their citizens much.

      hmmmm

With a similar population to Britain, and a fine approximately 60% (exchange rates and fees vary) greater than ours, the UK, what does that say about Britain valuing it's citizens?

Yes, i know, we're only valued around election time and 31 January and 31 July.

    alleged privacy offences?

"fined Facebook a cool €1m for alleged privacy offences"

Punishments are not usually levied for alleged offences.

Methinks ElReg is being overly cautions here.
