back to article Baltimore hit with more ransomware, ChinaMobile gets the boot in the US, and another (mild) Systemd system-d'oh!

Last week, a Symantec boss stepped down, a Chinese hacker was called out, and an AirBnB hidden camera creep was cuffed. What else went on? See below. Systemd, Linux, AMD and shoddy randomness File this one under bad situations that probably don't affect anyone. It reemerged that some older generation AMD processors fail to …

Baltimore hit by ransomware (yet again)

    They don't learn, do they?

China Mobile blocked from the US

Next on the list will be Chinese-branded mobile phones and routers/modems and switches for home use?

At the end of the day, western companies cannot compete with China's (price) "dumping" in western countries. The reason why (western companies can't compete) is because they're too happy to sub-contract manufacturing to China (and don't forget to throw in the source code as an added bonus).

To be honest, I see this as a fight between the lesser-of-two-evils: Chinese-branded products which cost a fraction of western-branded products or expensive western-branded products that barely pay the right amount of taxes.

So, in the end, the Americans are in a lose-lose situation.

Why are Chinese Products so Cheap?

Because they work for slave wages.

The average Chinese worker gets paid between 6,000 and 8,000 yuan a month. That’s about $875 to $1,150.

Slave wages? USD900/month is comfortably more than the salary of a schoolteacher here in Croatia. The average salary here in the capital is €850.

You mean the price dumping by (allegedly) American companies manufacturing in China?

Strangely, I have the same problem with suspend (it works once, but after waking up it won't suspend again until after a reboot) running Ubuntu 18.04...but I'm on a Ryzen system so does that mean the RNG isn't the cause of it?

The city of Baltimore’s woes were all over the US media this weekend. Oh poor me, I’m a victim. Too bad, the FBI and several federal agencies published an interagency warning to government agencies; federal, state and municipalities. In the warning, the FBI recommended having an offline copy of data to recover from an in case of a destructive attack.

Can only imagine the pinheads in Baltimore decided to save a few bucks.... or maybe they were holding out for a grant of other people’s money.

Nice to see that Baltimore overhauled their security in the light of the 2018 attack... Oh, wait...

    Who didn't see this coming?

" Facebook is fessing up to allowing an unscrupulous marketing partner to play fast and loose with user data"

A pint to all the El Reg commentards that said that there were many, many, MANY more apps than just the one involved in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

It is also interesting to note that Facebook began investigating RankWave over 6 months ago, but just like this story, waited until now.

(Dropped on a weekend when people were busy celebrating with their mums)

And according to the FULL story, there is still an app on Google's Play Store asking for users FB logins:

Glad to see researchers are taking a closer look at systemd

I predict there will many more issues to be found in systemd that are more critical than the bug mentioned in this Roundup.

What was that old saying again?

"Make each program do one thing well. To do a new job, build afresh rather than complicate old programs by adding new 'features' "

(I must say I am liking Devuan so far)

Suspend breaking because of an RNG issue?

That is one hell of a code smell. It might even outrank "New Jersey" and "Times Square on New Year's Day" in stinkiest thing ever observed by a human being.

Sure, its a bit of a trivial problem that only affects a small number of people, but all the failure that has to happen for this bug to exist is staggering.
