back to article OpenAI retires its Dota-2 playing bots after crushing e-sport pros one last time

OpenAI’s video game playing bots OpenAI Five thrashed team OG, the reigning human champions of Dota 2, on Saturday in matches that were live-streamed from San Francisco. The non-profit recently turned for-profit research hub has been honing OpenAI Five’s skills for Dota 2, an online strategy game, for a while now. In fact, the …

" OpenAI can also see the whole map, something humans can’t do. "

That is not the goal of gameplaying AI. OpenAI have just gone for a cheap headline-grabber rather than doing their homework.

Presumably SkyNet will have a satellite map of the Earth or access to Google Maps so come the rise of the machines it won't matter.

Ok, so the AI won using an interface not available to the humans making information (such as being able to see the entire map) available and artifically restricting the options available to the humans.

I'm not particually impressed. If the AI is being allowed to see the entire map, the humans should be able to as well. Otherwise it's like playing poker with being able to see the opponents cards while they can't see yours; that sort of advantage does make winning somewhat easier!

that sort of advantage does make winning somewhat easier!

What, like the advantage gained from being a species that has spent millions of years evolving generalized problem solving abilities? :-)

Of course the poor machine needed an advantage. However, now that it's succeeded at the task set, we can weaken the handicapping and try to improve its performance some more.

Problem solving abilities are a genetic trait? Have we identified the section of genome responsible?

well, yes. isnt that the distinguishing characteristic of humans above all other species? we've evolved the ability to solve problems.

Yes, and anything in fair competition should be held to the same standard!

I don't know, crows can fashion hooks out of a straight twig and use it to dig grubs out of wood. Many other animals have been shown to be able to solve various problems where the solution isn't obvious and some even recognize the need for teamwork to solve some problems.

In short, I'd say solving problems isn't a defining characteristic and the older I get the more I think Andy Kaufman's character Latka from Taxi was right, it's mindless superstition and pointless ritual.

" Before OpenAI Five played at The International last year, it had already guzzled 128,000 CPU and 256 Nvidia GPUs. !

.... but could it play Crysis!

    Stop

    Time to grow up...

stop playing games and start doing something with your life, Mr. AI. You can't pretend that you are a teenager forever.

Now about that career plan, ... I see that 'taxi driver' and 'pilot' would benefit from your lightning-quick reflexes, but are you sure you are ready to take responsibility for all those lives? Also, I see here that you require copious amounts of electrical nutrition, that might be a problem in a mobile environment. OK. so how about you go back to playing some games for now and we'll figure out that career thing at a later time.
