If Open Source code is used for a free service then that's fair play. If it is being used for profit then some money should go to the authors.

I'm all for free software, but corporations expect money for people using their IP. Only fair to pay when you use other peoples IP to make a buck.

How's that supposed to work? Lots of code that is still in use was put into the public domain years ago and some of the authors are no longer alive.

Company's following the principle of enlightened self-interest should automatically be contributing to stuff unless they want to maintain and support it themselves, and it looks like this is exactly what Google's doing by effectively subcontracting.

    Google vs Amazon

Google's decision to partner with these companies and others stands in contrast to Amazon's approach. Bezos's firm has launched cloud services that compete with MongoDB and Elasticsearch without cutting them in on the revenue, for example.

Amazon is parasitizing even at Google's own Android afaik, how should they won't on "regular" open source then? e.g. for comparision, "Google Summer of Code" is small (mostly PR!) project for company of that scale ("do not evil" hell yes sure), but still: at least it exists. Nothing similar at Amazon afaik.

btw, I think that "Google Cloud partnership" is (or will be) related to Stadia project.
