Fancy naming a data mining thingy after a magical communications device subverted by the epitome of ultimate evil to spy on it's minions ...

Their software is popular as it's powerful and easy to use. It's heavily used in NSA and GCHQ. They've got an advantage of Raytheon as they're using big data and new technology and concentrate on making the user interface simple to use and are quick to adapt to new requirements. Peter Thiel is a nasty piece of work - he's spent tens of millions to sue news organisations like Gawker that reported about his sexuality (gay) which ultimately shut them down. There was also a huge controversy in New Zealand that he was granted NZ citizenship for no valid reason (other than being rich).

To be fair, whilst he may still be a nasty piece of work, what business do they have "reporting on his sexuality"...

what business do they have "reporting on his sexuality"...

That is their business - reporting private information and gossip. And while many people may dislike that business, it's protected by law in the US. When the wealthy use their resources to shut down speech they don't like, that's a problem.

"news organisations like"...he only sued one, no need to make it sound like it's his hobby. Besides, Gawker was the nasty piece of work in this, they actively outed gay people without their consent, published sex tapes without the participant's consent, etc. etc. They deserved to be shut down.
