So it's really a very familiar story – a platform folding in features sold by third-party ISVs. Similar complaints dogged Microsoft as it incorporated features like file compression into MS-DOS, and later bundled a browser and a media player with Windows.
Not quite, whilst not wishing to defend MS, they didn't block the installation and use of third-party equivalents, although they may have used undocumented API's.
The issue here is that the OS vendors is also the store owner and they don't want users having the option to use a third-party product.

That's only part of the problem. The other part is it's the only store in town, so to speak, that Apple users can use. There might be another one or two outside of Apple but the average user won't know about them.
Pretty standard in tech. People overestimate "progress" * in the short term, and underestimate it in the long term.
