back to article HPE's cold storage digit: 2% growth better than a kick in the teeth – but it's no Dell EMC

HPE storage revenues – like NetApp's – grew just 2 per cent year-on-year in the firm's first 2019 quarter, with Nimble all-flash arrays leading the charge amble. Inside HPE's $7.56bn quarterly revenues were $0.98bn storage revenues, 12.9 per cent of HPE's business. EVP and CFO Tarek Robbiati said in the earnings call: "We saw …

    Joke

Those figures look a bit under 3par

It appeared that HP customers were over 3par, but HP were a little more Nimble than expected and managed to come in all square.

Since when were Commvault a storage vendor? Backup appliances where they're currently on their third attempt to break that market?

it's about revenue in the storage category, which includes backup and archive software (and yes, appliances, if applicable).

    Comparison with Dell?

Only if you're also going to compare debt. You might try looking at free cashflow, but basically I think Dell is trying every trick in the book to put itself in a good light after some fairly hair-raising financial engineering.

      Re: Comparison with Dell?

Trying every trick in the book! They're leaders in market share and revenue on both servers and storage, what else do they need to do! Not to mention surpassed HPE 's HCI which failed to deliver due to poor strategy. And then you say dept! As if HPE doesn't have any dept.

        Re: Comparison with Dell?

I converted all my debt to dept in a shady financial re-engineering move of my own and everyone got distracted that no-one noticed that I couldn't deliver on my strategy of Everything to the Enterprise!

    Merger time

Time for HPE and IBM to merge, so they could fold up their tent at the same time, save everyone money and effort.

      Re: Merger time

First the combined HPE/IBM would need to lay off a bunch more old white males experienced staff.

AC because I'm already in that club.

"Robbiati said he expected "storage revenue to ramp targeting $1bn per quarter""

That would be fantastic. HP hasn't done $4bn/year in Storage since er ...... 2011. Well done Antonio, massive progress, almost getting to where HP was with the foot-tapper Mark Hurd. At least it's better than Meg "The Wasted Years" Whitman.

HPE are claiming 7 straight quarters of growth but your chart doesn't seem to support that?

Also, Dell look like they've had a fairly hefty drop in the last quarter? No story there?

Re: HCI - the great distraction of our time.

Q1 is typically soft for Dell and VMware is what I believe they said on the earnings call.
