back to article Infosec's Thanksgiving turkey triumvirate: Tesla, Tumblr, Trump (as in Ivanka)... and tons more

As America prepares for Thursday's Thanksgiving rituals of turkey, football, and awkward conversations with extended family, three organisations are going to have admins working overtime to clean up security messes. White House staffer Ivanka Trump joins tech icons Tesla and Tumblr in reporting embarrassing security-related- …

Not even close to the same

Speaking as someone who held TS clearance for the UK MoD and worked on their email servers, the two situations aren't even remotely close and El'Reg as a magazine that claims to be IT literate should know better, rather than succumbing to "gotcha" headlines.

Oh friend, you must be new here.

(PS: The article spells out the situation. If you can't take the ribbing, Breitbart is back that way, snowflake ----->)

Typically fake news, throwing insults at people when they call you out for being fake news.

What Hillary did was use a personal email account to send and receive secret and top secret information, had the access control security headers stripped and stored the email on an unsecured server, that is what was against the rules.

Using personal email accounts for unclassified communications is fine as long as you hand over a copy for record keeping.

"to send emails to aides, cabinet members, and personal assistants." "no classified materials were sent from the account"

As long as the emails are handed over at the end of Trump's first term no rules have been broken.

"it's not like the Trump campaign made a similar situation the focal point of its White House run in 2016 or anything."

They didn't, Hillary was using her private [unsecured] email server for secret and top secret communications and having classification headers stripped. And she didn't hand the emails over when she left the job, she had them deleted which does violate federal record keeping laws.

          Are you gullible or stupid?

It must be one or the other, either you believe the Trumps when they say their use of private email (commercial, really insecure) was completely innocent.

Or you think the CIA/FBI agents who set up and installed the presidential email server used by the ex-president and his wife ballsed up the job and left it insecure.

Here's a hint: Trump always lies.

The Washington Post called them "Ivanka Trump’s personal emails" and she doesn't even have access to secret or top secret documents.

"Or you think the CIA/FBI agents who set up and installed the presidential email server used by the ex-president and his wife ballsed up the job and left it insecure."

Hillary's email server wasn't setup by the CIA or FBI, it was set up by some IT people she hired, the same plonkers who went on reddit and asked how to edit emailed stored in an outlook inbox.

Re: The Washington Post called them "Ivanka Trump’s personal emails"

              From the WP article:

Trump sent hundreds of emails last year to White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistants using a personal account, many of them in violation of federal records rules [...]

she often discussed or relayed official White House business using a private email account.[...]

Trump used her personal account to discuss government policies and official business fewer than 100 times — often replying to other administration officials who contacted her through her private email, according to people familiar with the review.

Another category of less-substantive emails may have also violated the records law: hundreds of messages related to her official work schedule and travel details that she sent herself and personal assistants who cared for her children and house,[...]

Trump continued to occasionally use her personal email in her official capacity [...]

Trump had used her personal email for official business far more frequently than known, according to people familiar with the administration’s review.[...] “She was the worst offender in the White House,”

I know - let's just hold EVERYONE to the SAME standards. works for me.

So if Mrs. Clinton stays out of jail and isn't prosecuted for 'just that part', ok I'm good. Let's treat Ivanka exactly the SAME way as Mrs. Clinton gets treated. Hell, Ivanka could RUN FOR OFFICE in a couple of decades, or be SECRETARY OF STATE - why not!

Now about all of the 'hammer-smashing of devices' and not coughing up the 30,000 e-mails and pretending KNOWN classified e-mails weren't because "I did not know what ' C' meant"... (I don't think Ivanka did THAT now did she?)

        so, in summary:

        * use of private e-mail for non-classified yet gummint-related things: hand slap

        * trying to hide everything, use private e-mail for classified things, and obstruct justice by physically destroying the evidence: lock up and throw away the key!

not coughing up the 30,000 e-mails

I assume you'll be just as vigilant in insisting the Republican party finds and coughs up the 2 million emails they illegally deleted?

If not then you are just another hypocrite.

While it is easy to joke about internet funbux, a number of people have had their lives profoundly impacted by money lost on cryptocurrency investments, and if the markets were being manipulated illegally, whoever was behind it should be brought to justice.

Eh. I don't feel sorry for someone who loses his/her shirt at the roulette table, why should this be different?

And the casino industry is at least regulated...

Then there are the people who made huge capital gains in the 2017 tax year and then lost it all in 2018. That's going to be fun to explain to the tax man.

Two platitudes come to mind: 1) you can't con an honest man; and 2) play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

"made other changes to adjust privileges accordingly following a full audit"

Um, maybe you guys should have studied the specifications better before implementing such a shitty idea ? Since when do you give access-level granting abilities to people who are not at least moderator ?

Try as I may, I cannot remember a single forum I have ever visited where anyone but the forum owner could grant access to anyone. They might have tried looking into that before deciding that anyone could change anyone's access.

That is the most brain-dead decision I have ever read about in managing access to something.

"images that are detected never reach the platform"

And what happens to those who post those images ? Doesn't Twitter have a duty to report that to the FBI, so that Agent Smith can go and have a nice little chat with the bottom-scum pond-dweller who thought it was a good idea ?

Bah, kids these days. They never know how to finish a job.

    Slow decline ?

Bitcoin went from $20k to $5k in less than a year and you call that a slow decline ?

In any other industry it would warrant the moniker "free-fall". Sheesh.

      Re: Slow decline ?

If you look at the charts for the last year, you will actually see both: a free fall at the start of 2018 THEN a slow decline since March...

Survey of Private Services used by Public Officials

"...on a domain owned by her and husband Jared Kushner."

Um, ownership does not equate to administration thereof, because you just know that that domain wasn't setup by them directly (or at least if would be shocking if they did).

Given the impulsive nature of the way email and such are used, I'm wondering if something preemptive can be done about these things. It brings to mind so ideas that are a little out there, but I think that a survey of what private services our public officials--and their spouses--would be worth a study of some kind, at least a journalistic one.
