back to article Do you NVMe? Pure Storage smirks at rivals amid 34% sales surge

Pure Storage may still be losing tens of millions of dollars each quarter but has signed off on its first acquisition as a public outfit, buying cloudy dedupe biz StorReduce. The California-based firm, founded in 2014, will help Pure tap further into hybrid cloud integrations to manage large-scale unstructured data. Western …

FWIW we tend to stick to GAAP.

Good move on Pure's part, probably the biggest gap in the flashblade product that they need to plug in the near term is the lack of deduplication along with replication and snapshot management to really start going deep into the Isilon and Netapp NAS customer base, that and the ability to tier into the cloud for archiving inactive data.

    1. Secta_Protecta

And it is a pretty big gap, especially when you consider how good NetApp's dedupe is, not to mention their mature and effective replication and snapshot management. IMHO Pure stepped into the flash gap and got their foot in the door, but the incumbent vendors learned their lesson and are now offering much more complete solutions with reliable and efficient technology. Pure's marketing is first rate but if you ask most non-Pure techies who have worked with it and others they'll tell you that the alternatives are better.

        I'd rather have a UCS/Pure FlashStack, than a USC/Netapp flexpod

Can you expand on that? Both have their pros/cons but curious why you think that.

Pure has funkier futuristic logo's and their boxes look cooler.

Why do you like an island of srorage?

Pure is pretty good, it is fast, easy with good analytics and even better dedup. Those are all table stakes these days and even tho they do those things better, they are not really adding any net new functionality or features. NetApp Flex pod has cloud connectivity and can also snap to white boxes. Data Mobility or as NetApp calls it the Data Fabric represents more value by allowing you to put the data where you want it cheaply and easily. The other funny thing to note is only NetApp has NVMe all the way through, Pure does not. Pure also makes a big deal about their AI airy system, as they should, but this is another example of a great story but a weak platform. NetApp A800 scales 4X more than airy and supports multi protocol and cloud connectivity. edge to core to cloud...no way Pure touches that with any amount of marketing.

Re: Why do you like an island of srorage?

I forgot to mention that Flashyblade is made from propitiatory hardware which does give it some unique advantages but the cost of building and supporting it will be a huge weight on their profitability.

They're hardly a start up any more, at what point are companies like Pure expected to actually make a profit??

When they start becoming opportunity bound or Dell-EMC get their shit together whichever comes first

Dell could sell a lot more if they were happy to make a loss on every sale! In fact anyone could.

        1. Secta_Protecta

Which is exactly what Pure have been doing, but at some point you have to pay the piper. FUD'ing the competition and giving partner sales cash in hand incentives on top of commission isn't necessarily a good long term strategy.

FB sales come at a cost to pure- Flash Blade sales are subsidized by Flash Array sales team revenue. It needs to stand on its own at some point. I guess if you don't have good features you have to buy your deals.

            1. spinning risk

Every Flash Array rep has to sell 1 FB to make it to club

Sounds like bundles are happening at Pure to the expense of Flash array revenue...
