back to article Ding dong! Dell about to go public again – report

Dell is about to reveal a plan to go public again, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. The paper reported that Dell intends to swap shares in itself (which are held privately) with the “tracking stock” it created when buying EMC. The tracking stock was created to do two things: …

Dell about to go public again.

Why didn't Dell diversify into other markets such as mobile space, set top boxes, multimedia centers etc., such that they could ride out dips in the PC market.

You mean the low-margin stuff that has forced other manufacturers out of the business? Sounds like a winner!

No, I meant high end stuff like the iPad, the iPhone and a high end set top box combined with services such as high-def movies and games piped directly into your living room. You sell them the boxes and then make even more money selling them services.

Additionally, if even Dell can't make money out of the IBM PC, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Netflix seems to be doing well enough by not selling the boxes.

In case you hadn't noticed the PC market has been in decline for years and more recently the notebook market has started to shrink. Why? Because we've all already got all the computing power we need.

Dell's going private was always only about taking advantage of the status and financial engineering to make lots of money for Silverlake. Remember those juicy 30-year bonds?

Because that worked out so well for Cisco, Google, and others? <facepalm>

I hope Mikey has a plan to deal with the things that Board members do to corporations that caused Dell's need to shed public status to survive. I know that is what, in part, is killing Apple right now. It was only because of the constant threat of failure looming over their Board's heads if they stopped Steve's ideas that kept Apple awesome when it was when under Steves control.

Best of luck to all at Dell and their head man Mikey. ❤️

    Allows Gelsinger to depart

With vmware losing some of its autonomy, Gelsinger can depart gracefully and take up the Intel CEO role.
