back to article Playboy is suing Boing Boing over Imgur centrefold link

Iconic lads' mag Playboy is suing oddball internet culture website Boing Boing for linking to an Imgur archive featuring scans of centrefold models from over the years – a move described by the US Electronic Frontier Foundation as "frankly mystifying". Playboy Entertainment Group filed suit against the business behind Boing …

Some of these are collector items

Try to finding the issue with Claudia Christian. I wish you luck. The nerds have stolen it from the local library even if it was there in the first place.

Shortly after the Playboy issue she must have realised that there was a market for nerd fullfillment cos she started her own website called Babylon Babes. It didn't last long.

But your honor, I read it for the interviews.

Or have people quit saying that by now?

Re: But your honor, I read it for the interviews.

I was always amused at how when they published a CD-ROM of all their interviews - just the interviews - sales didn't take off the way such claims might have you believe...

Well, if I recall correctly Playboy also once opted to stop using nude models in order to "get with the modern times". Read that in the news and I don't know if this was a global decision or only from the local brand in my country, but yeah: probably needless to say that it didn't go well and a few months later I read that it had been reversed. Gee, I wonder why? ;)

But about those interviews... Seriously though. they have printed some really good articles and interesting interviews over the years (those I'm aware off). When I was a kid I bought a few Playboys myself (2 years worth in total, still have some of those) and I recall one of the issues even containing an interview with Khadaffi. That's something you don't get to read everyday. Heck, the (Dutch) May issue from 1990 even has an interview with Donald Trump, something which recently became a lot more interesting (the only reason I recall that is because I looked this up not too long ago).

Of course I'm not trying to claim that the interviews were the main reason I bought those of course :)

        Re: @yank

In the UK in the Nineties all the rag media decided to drop the naked female form.

It only took them a few weeks to realise their profits were down. So, they started by having male models. Just to prove they weren't sexist.

The following month it was back to square one and the female models could breath a sigh of relief and get back to paying off their mortgages...

Sir! You can search for ISBN 1452161038 if you prefer to look slightly more innocent.

Until you actually find the book, then your URL history will be mildly tainted. OK, that is "mild" compared to some of the sordid stuff that I allegedly look for...

Unfortunately my favourite purveyor of books (abebooks) seems to be throwing odd web site errors just now. Probably knows my disgusting intentions...

It's okay, Playboy was never explicit enough to show that part.

Having no search history looks suspicious.

Since my Nigerian uncle gave up being a prince he now sells themed search histories that you can import to your browser: Trainspotting, gardening and weather themes are selling well currently.

His dark web portal sells some filthy ones. Great if someone at work annoys you - upload one to their laptop and tell HR how depraved they are.

I'm not worried about my search history, my addiction to Rule 34 assures that anyone else searching my surfing history will almost assuredly die screaming, clawing at their eyes, & incurably insane...

Which leaves more porn for me!

    Playboy sales must be bad

    since H-H passed away.

The Streisand Effect in all its glory.

They were linking. They didn't host the content. I forsee a loss for Playboy but their sales will soar (for a while).

Re: Playboy sales must be bad

With the orginal archive scans off line that might be the point. Lots of free advertising.

    Naked women?

    Huh, what, wait...

So there are pictures of actual naked women on the internet! But they have been forcibly removed by these people called "Playboy", sounds like a good business opportunity for someone.

I didn't realize that Playboy was still around after they started closing down the Bunny Pads or whatever they were called. Been a long time since I've seen one in a bookstore. Or are they online only? My, how time flies when we're having fun.

It was the complete archive of centrefolds going back to the 50's(?), so there should be some Bakelite fantastic with attendant airbrushing in there for you.

    Playboy? Is it still around?

Given the 'action' on the InterNet, it's hard to imagine Playboy sales amount to much - except for those who read the articles.

Just another publicity stunt to promote sales following the death of Hefner.

I just like the partial headline: "Playboy sues Boing Boing". Surely the article was all downhill from there. :-)
