back to article Commvault scale-out appliance gunning for Rubrik and Cohesity

Commvault is launching a HyperScale all-in-one appliance providing a scale-out platform for its data protection and management services, taking on competing offerings from the likes of Rubrik and Cohesity. Company CEO, chairman and president Bob Hammer said there is a concerted and ongoing move to scale-out cloud-like …

So this is basically a new Bezel on a few 1U CommVault Media Agents?

Each node is part of the scale out cluster and plays the role of a data mover.

Pardon my ignorance (Its been a while since I did my Simpana Installation / Administration course), but isn't the Media Agent essentially the name for CommVaults Data Mover?

This looks like multiple MA's pointing at a shared clustered Repository (probably running a local index cache per node, or shared between nodes) with dedupe enabled.

Happy to be proved wrong, as the explanation against them "being complex" is simply them listing CV's feature set.

You are right- Media Agents have historically been the data movers in Commvault. In case of the HyperScale, there aren't specific nodes dedicated to running this function. Every node plays the role of a Media Agent. The benefit is that each node brings compute and storage capacity to the cluster unlike a scale up approach where you keep adding capacity behind a given media agent, and then the media agent could potentially run out of processing power at some point.

So pretty much what I said before then (Each node is a Media Agent).

      No pony tail.

Just a beard, good coffee and a really nice take on avocado on toast.

Re: Commvault have redefined the meaning of scale-out

You clearly don't understand the meaning of scale-out, do you??

Just ripped out a networker install and replaced with rubrik. I'll never go back

    Networker install

And what does you ripping NetWorker install has to do with Commvault? My understanding is that Commvault Systems is not a part of Dell. I wish you all the best with your backup vendor of choice.
