back to article Multi-tier Tegile array mixes NVMe and SAS flash like a big ol' storage wedding cake

Tegile has announced the first mainstream multi-tiered flash array in the storage industry. What does it do and how does it do it? Tegile has a line of two-tiered hybrid flash and disk drive arrays, and now has a two-tiered all-flash array. Think of the updated IntelliFlash HD as a normal high-performance Tegile all-flash …

didn't dell have this 6 years ago?

Compellent was doing sub lun auto tiering between SLC and MLC. I have never used compellent but remember talking about it at the time.

All nvme is is just another tier of flash. (When it comes to data placement anyway)

so do may other vendors. But it may not be the same (haven't bothered looking) as they say its real time placement, where as compellent and the others (3par etc) are schedule based, except for the SSD caching tiers which are real time, but limited capacity.

    But Who Needs It?

If all SSD arrays are giving sub 1ms latency who really needs to go that tiny bit faster (other than a few real time trading apps)?

this is funny. NetApp has ALWAYS had this. for years. whatever argument you have against, that, then they certainly do with their more recent offerings. EMC, HP.....this isnt new. this is just standard.

Boy....must be really hard for the small players these days. "Hey look! we made a new car! It has 4 wheels...that are filled with....wait for it....AIR! The tires are filled with AIR its amazing!!!"

    Tiering? How quaint.

I agree with the above poster about getting hard for the small players. It's getting more and more difficult to truly differentiate yourself as a storage vendor. And performance is really a one trick pony. Storage only has to be "good enough" and the vast majority of storage products probably are.
