back to article Shocking crime surge – THE TRUTH: England, Wales stats now include hacking and fraud

Crime stats for England and Wales have shown a huge year-on-year increase. Don't panic, though: it's due to the inclusion of fraud and computer misuse offences for the first time. In a report published this week, the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reckoned there were 6.2 million reported incidents of crime in the 12 …

    Awesome!

So now name calling on Twatter is included in the crime stats, how useful.

Which makes me surprised Scotland aren't following suit as I believe that's where Police Scotland spend most of their resources. Policing off colour jokes, etc.

      Re: Awesome!

Not the way I read the report. "Computer misuse" accounts for 1,966,000 reported incidents, of which 1,300,000 are "Computer virus" and 667,000 are "Unauthorised access to personal information (including hacking)". That leaves -1,000 (rounding error) incidents for your name calling, PTW.

If there are 1.3 million virus infections reported to the police, there must be hundreds of millions of actual infections. In my country, I'd expect reporting a computer virus to the police to be at best a pointless exercise. Are UK cops more diligent? Or are expectations higher?

Neither, just more idiots! We have people call 999 [911] because their Sat TV isn't working, so huge swathes expecting the police to do something about a virus isn't surprising.

We have national crime recording standards. So assaults etc. are all recorded for the stats. Crimes with no victim, or where the victim is the Crown, generally aren't recorded (speeding etc.)

That's the theory. In practice recording varies. The Met, for example, won't record some offences by telephone whereas others do, so that keeps their stats low. In other areas crimes which could be either recordable or are non-recordable (discharging a firearm could be an offence against the Crown or against the person being shot) are recorded according to how the Chief Constable wants to massage the figures. It's supposed to be the most serious recorded, but it's up to the crime recorder how they interpret the alleged facts.

          Re: Awesome!

As far as I am aware the most reputable numbers nationally come from the British Crime Survey - another regular source of idiot press reports that "the British Crime Survey doesn't include murder" without any explanation of how a victim-reported survey would implement that.

This has nothing to do with reporting crimes to the police. These crime statistics are produced from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (formerly the British Crime Survey), which is an annual survey of 50,000 people asking about what crimes they have been victims of, in face-to-face interviews so avoiding a lot of the obvious criticisms of less thorough surveys. The entire point being that many crimes, such as computer viruses but also more serious things like domestic abuse, aren't often reported to the police and so don't appear if you only look at recorded crime.

There are still plenty of criticisms that can be made about it, but it's generally considered to give a much better idea of the levels of crime than pretty much any other measures.

Perfect opportunity for a Trump type to pounce

Talk about how crime is skyrocketing, it must be all the immigrants, we need to close our borders immediately. When he's corrected as to the reason for the increase, he'll just shout louder and his followers will believe him not the facts.

    Worked over here.

The first time I read it I thought you'd lifted your opening sentence from the Daily Mail...

Remind me how many GOP supporters rioted... sorry "protested" when Obama was sworn in?

Well quite a lot of them actually.

And that is ignoring the fact that any rioters at anti-trump protests will almost certainly be the little boys of the neo-nazi alt right thinking they are being very clever with their false flag operations.
