back to article What happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas: Razer prototypes nicked

The head of gaming PC company Razer says someone stole a pair of prototype devices from its booth at the CES conference. Min-Liang Tan did not say what precisely was stolen from the booth, where Razer had been showcasing both its new hardware and concept offerings, but he suggested the heist could be the work of a rival vendor …

    Have you heard this one?

Three guys with sewn-together overcoats walk into CES 2017...

How to find the perps: whoever releases a triple-screen laptop next is it!

Seriously, don't bring your good gear to the conventions. Just keep it in the hotel room.

Also, what is anyone going to do with that rig? I mean, COME ON! Do you need that much screen real estate? You only need two 4K screens to hack into The Matrix, I guess you could use the free one for porn.

The purpose of CES might actually BE showing your good gear, don't you think?

      > Do you need that much screen real estate?

Yup. I have 3 screens on the PC I'm using now. Middle one's portrait for coding, the other 2 are for email, browser, pidgin, screen of whatever I'm debugging, etc. I remember when I had 1 screen, I spent a lot of time minimizing stuff then hunting for it to pull it back up. Now I just look over to the other screen.

Only problem is I can't take it to work when it would really help at times, because it's a large desktop tower.

Good to see you're thinking small there, though.

Same here running a Triptych of 22"s in the office mostly coding and website related stuff that requires a real time eye. Couple of years back though I was lucky enough to meet 'Kohai' one of the staffers from Chess.com, an amazing woman with insane levels of multi tasking skill who was running a five screen monster at home. Simultaneously handling customer support from billing to technical SNAFU's, overseeing the forum/chat mayhem and somehow finding time to bug test the next code push.

So yeah there's definitely a market for the little Razer.

Indeed, multiple screens are increasingly the norm in those parts of the workplace where PCs are seen as more than just a means of getting access to your calendar and emails. Even with the higher resolution afforded by a 4K screen, it can be more convenient to simply have seperate screens for seperate windows, rather than trying to juggle multiple windows within the same effective viewport area on a single higher-resolution screen. And unless the single screen is also physically larger, then you're going to have trouble reading the contents of those windows given they now occupy a far smaller area of your retina assuming you're still sitting a comfortable distance away from the screen...

Whilst I don't have a personal need for a multi-screen laptop like this - I'm fortunate enough to work for an employer who still gets the concept of providing suitable desktop kit for desk-bound R&D employees rather than assuming everyone can do their jobs just with a bog standard corporate laptop - I can easily imagine quite a few engineers, designers and anyone else with a genuine need to be able to display lots of data at the same time, would be getting very excited at the prospect of a product like this making it to market.

Let's forget where we put it,

and hype its advertising via "espionage". In the mean time, let's try to duct tape 2 more screens on, 5 might sell it.

So they apparently put a lot of effort into creating them but not so much looking after them.

Just find the widest exit door and check security camera feed.

Which is a quite a lift, I imagine it has quite a heft to it (similar to that ridiculous $9k laptop that looks bigger than my PC tower with a curved monitor glued to it)

I don't honestly see why anyone would want to steal this thing.

Perhaps Day Traders who sit at Starbucks with their Double Ristretto Venti Half-Soy Nonfat Decaf Organic Chocolate Brownie Iced Vanilla Double-Shot Gingerbread Frappuccino Extra Hot With Foam Whipped Cream Upside Down Double Blended, One Sweet'N Low and One Nutrasweet, and Ice.

And 3 4k screens. If there was anything impressive in the unit it would have been the video card(s).

Since people are prepared to stand in queues for hours and spend a fortune to be the First! to get the latest greatest tech gadget, I can easily see someone being prepared to steal something that nobody else will have yet.

It's a prototype? Salesman had to come up with a quick excuse why it wasn't working...

    Large screen TVs gone

Attended a show a few years ago in the UK representing a big company.

Last day of the show, it gets crazy, every one trying to get to the lorries first.

so we , having had a great show, went out back of the stand to finish up the complimentary drinks or three.

came back hours or so later, the stand was empty.

8 large screen TVs ripped of the wall stands,

Well, I have three screens on my Macbook. The one on the right is on HDMI, while the one on the left is on a Thunderbolt/VGA. I didn't think that is very special actually.

Are they both powered and fed from the macbook without power nor cables? No didn't think so. Bit of a silly comment really?

    Razer? Meh.

Don't worry. Whatever magic sauce may or may not have been in the stolen goods is either already available by someone else who did it better or wasn't going to work without serious flaws. It's like if someone stole an Apple prototype. Who cares? Thank goodness it wasn't something important!

I wonder how small fonts are on a 4K laptop screen.

When will I get a true 4K 5in smartphone? And how many pixels will my fingertip encompass then...
