    Advice to gadget makers...

You'd seriously better considering implementing some tight safety standards on the lithium batteries in your gadgets, and on their integration into the gadget, to ensure that THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

If we ever get to the point where entire classes of gadgets are banned from flights, then the repercussions are enormous.

This requires Industry wide standards, like NOW.

They can copy and paste them from the nearest MIL-STDs.

    wonder if they check

Boarding a flight with 2 galaxy note 3s in a few hrs. Wonder if they will have pictures of the phone posted to try to catch them or something.

To answer my own Q flying out of san francisco airport last night no extra checks just a message on the TVs (every now and then) saying note 7 is not allowed. No mention of criminal charges just you would be denied boarding.

Note 3 with android 4.4.x is about as perfect a phone as i could hope for.

    What about...

Having a fire-proof cabinet on aircraft so that a failing device (and it will happen) can be managed in flight?

    Fair call

Given Samsung has permanently recalled and stopped manufacturing the Note 7, there really is no reason for anyone to still have (other than its bloody fine phone unless you have one that self-combusts) one. My original nor the replacement showed any signs of any issues, but I wasn't going to take the risk (nor did I want to lose 750 quid worth, if you go by list price, of kit.
