back to article Microsoft kills RC4 crypto

Microsoft has removed support from RC4, an ancient and easy-to-evade cipher, from its browsers. Google and the Mozilla Foundation have beaten Redmond to the punch with this change, killing off the cipher in past releases. IE 11 and Edge are therefore now at parity. Re: Was about time

A decade ago, the Internet was still under the dark age of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

'Best viewed on Internet Explorer' banners everywhere. And Microsoft couldn't be arsed to improve IE because monopoly and the alternative browsers hadn't yet come of age.

    Security is important

However, in some vendors minds its just not quite as important as keeping the lights on for some poorly maintained piece of software that refuses to update to current standards.

They should have done this a long time ago.

Unfortunately, there is still a long list of dead / decaying security standards that need to be killed off in favour of their far more secure replacements.

I'm wondering if a name and shame list of products still using poor standards would do any good ?

This way, people could take a view on which vendors actively maintain their products and update as security technologies go into their twilight years. For the rest, we know who to avoid when purchasing the next leading edge of the day security product..

That is INDEED the problem ... the IT industry is LITTERED with natural born street cleaners, windows cleaners, garbage collectors, or brick layers ...

The IT industry needs engineers and those are hard to get by ... this is why we had an Internet Explorer monopoly, Office monopoly and Windows monopoly ... but it is all changing now ...
