I heard rumors that all CenturyLink wanted was the copper plant to run VDSL2 on, but Vz made them take the whole enchilada.

Well, of course it's compatible with the current fiber plant. The termination equipment on both ends determines the speed, not the fiber type.

How, using different colored lasers and diffraction grating at the end to separate the signals. If so there is going to be cross talk and an upper limit to the maximum bit rate, so should that be up to 40 Gbps.
To do so, Verizon will look to implement NG-PON2 via Mosaic, a software-defined network (SDN) architecture that Adtran has developed for telco services. The architecture will look to expand capacity by sending traffic over additional wavelengths, extending the spectrum that can be used on existing fiber cables to push more data through.
So really they've "invented" WDM from 70s (ok, 80s by the time it was run in a lab) with a bit of tech du jour SDN cool-aid.
(Yes I do realise that NG-PON2 uses TDWM and tunable lasers at ONUs, but since when have facts stood in the way of a piss take)
PON is crap anyways, why bother with the lipstick on the pig? It's a dead end when it comes to offering anything more than fancy cable. With the abundance of cheap ethernet-over-fiber gear, it doesn't even make sense financially except for networks which were stupid enough to lock themselves into a PON topology from the start. If you did it right, or do it right now, you can run any speeds now and in the future by just swapping out the gear at both ends of the fiber pair (or single fiber strand for that matter).
