back to article Quigley: FTTP wasn't a failed project

Founding NBN CEO Mike Quigley has given a speech defending both his legacy and the original fibre-to-the-premises network plan. The speech, given to Melbourne University's Networked Society Institute and the Telecommunications Society, is most notable for the extensive detail Quigley provides to support his case. Secretive Nonsense

Build FTTP for AU$43 billion! Quigley can make all sorts of crazy claims safe in the knowledge they will never be tested.

It is obvious that digging up everyone's front yard is more expensive than using the existing infrastructure. It might be well argued that the extra cost is worth it, but it is nonsense that it is cheaper to do FTTP. Two men for half a day per (easy) household is $800.

But both the old and new NBN are so secretive that there is no real way to test any numbers that either of them pull out of the air. The only certainty is that it will end up costing a lot more and take a lot longer than originally planned.

Lol less than 10% would have had the lawn dug up

      Re: Secretive Nonsense

Fortunately for us, Quigley backs his assertions up with facts and figures.

You should probably do a bit more study as very, very few front yards require digging for FTTP. The install is done through the existing pipes and poles.

Also, while the current NBN Co is very secretive and redact almost everything as Commercial in Confidence, the Labor NBN Co had almost none of this...

      Re: Secretive Nonsense

and yet, the coalitions version which was suppose to be cheaper then 43billion is suddenly more expensive, not delivered on time, and not up to the job.

Just check out the reports from recently switched on suburbs sync rates over 50mbps and usable connections of 3 mbps in peak hour. which for an upgrade is well underperforming what they had on ADSL.

But SHHHH the copper is fine, just ask telstra.

And to state more of the obvious

If the build were to have gone with FTTN from the start, there would still have been delays due to the aspestos in Telstra pits, meaning that the Coalition plan would have been stuck on the same delays and 'failures' of the original, far more superior plan.

    Cut the faecal matter...

Isn't it strange that FTTP is so much cheaper to deploy in every country but ours...and not by a small amount. I believe Verizon now place the cost per premise at $800, and Chorus in NZ are down to about $2300...compare that to the "New NBN Co" estimate of $4400 here in Australia, and you get a picture of a company management team that is either lying or too incompetent to continue.
