    Any one surprised?

Buy out your software's competitor, promise the sun and moon. Then when nobody's looking, strip its valuables, and chuck it under a bus.

Happens way to often when an upstart threatens the status quo.

And here I was thinking the phrase was "Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated!" But this is Microsoft, not the Borg... so "embrace and extinguish" may be more correct. Perhaps another reason never to depend too seriously upon anything proprietary?

    As for two full generations...

Another one that bites the dust.

Unable to take the pieces to another software.

Lack of user appreciation for open standards.

Calendar Facility for Clunky Windows Update?

It must be Microsoft are adding a calendar to 7's Windows Update? You get to book a date a month in advance Soviet Style, where you're allowed to pick up and download the updates for Windows 7.

    I still use Office 2000 + 97....

At least they can't pull that.... You can make your own Calendar system (along with email / SMS notifications in about an hour).... Nowadays M$ closes more operations than it creates... [RIP Lionhead Studios etc...]

    Embrace, Extend, Extinguish

Everything of worth has been sucked out and co-opted into Outlook. Now there is no more use for you!
